Malcolm and Lucy have lived in Wentworth all their lives, they raised their family here and know the strength and the diversity of the local community. Malcolm grew up in Vaucluse and Double Bay in the 1950s and 1960s and for much of his childhood, his father, Bruce, was a single parent.

Malcolm was educated at Vaucluse Public School and Sydney Grammar School. Malcolm’s high school education at Sydney Grammar was assisted by a scholarship. Seventeen years ago Malcolm arranged for an additional means tested scholarship to be established at Sydney Grammar in memory of his late father. Malcolm graduated from Sydney University with a BA LLB. He won a Rhodes Scholarship and completed a further law degree at Oxford.

During and after his studies at Sydney University, Malcolm worked as a journalist with The Bulletin, 2SM, TCN 9 and the London Sunday Times.

After a successful career in journalism Malcolm began practicing law in 1980. He quickly established a reputation as an effective advocate, most notably when he successfully defended former MI5 agent Peter Wright against the British Government, in the “Spycatcher” trial.

Malcolm left law for business in 1987 where he has since been responsible for the establishment and success of many Australian businesses. In particular he has been a determined supporter of Australian technology. He co-founded OzEmail in 1994. His software companies have won many awards for exporting Australian technology.

In 1997 Malcolm was elected to attend the Australian Constitutional Convention. He led the republican case in that Convention and in the subsequent referendum.

Malcolm has initiated numerous policy and research projects in areas such as education, indigenous affairs, home ownership affordability, balancing work and family responsibilities and national population and fertility policy. He was Chairman of the Menzies Research Centre between 2002 and 2004.

Malcolm married Lucy Hughes in 1980. Their two children, Alex and Daisy attended local schools and have now completed University.

Lucy and Malcolm have been partners not only in marriage but also in their many businesses. Lucy was the first female Lord Mayor of Sydney, a position she held until early 2004.

At the Federal election on 9 October 2004, Malcolm was elected as the Member for Wentworth and upon entering Parliament, he joined the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade as well as the House of Representatives Standing Committees on Economics, Health and Ageing and Legal and Constitutional Affairs. On 27 January 2006, Malcolm was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and just over twelve months later, he was appointed to Cabinet as the Minister for Environment and Water Resources; a position he held until the Federal Election on 24 November 2007.

On 6 December 2007, Malcolm was appointed as Shadow Treasurer and following a leadership ballot in September 2008, he was elected by his colleagues to lead the Liberal Party as Leader of the Opposition, a position held until 1 December 2009. Malcolm was the Minister for Communications from September 2013 to September 2015. He was elected the leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister on 14 September 2015 and was re-elected as Prime Minister of Australia at the Federal Election on 2 July 2016.

Malcolm and Lucy continue to live in the eastern suburbs of Sydney and have three grandchildren, Jack, Alice and Isla.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier was born in Detmold (Lippe district) on 5 January 1956. He has been married to Elke Büdenbender since 1995. They have one daughter. After attending grammar school in Blomberg and doing two years of military service, Frank-Walter Steinmeier began his degree in law at Justus Liebig University in Giessen in 1976. From 1980, he also studied political science. He passed the first state law examination in 1982 and then did his practical legal training in Frankfurt am Main and Giessen. He completed this training when he passed the second state law examination in 1986, after which he worked as a research fellow at the Chair of Public Law and Political Science in Justus Liebig University in Giessen. In 1991, he was awarded a doctorate in law for his thesis ‚Homeless citizens –the duty to provide housing and the right to a place to live‘. Traditions and prospects of state intervention to prevent and overcome homelessness“. In the same year, Frank-Walter Steinmeier moved to the State Chancellery of Land Lower Saxony in Hanover, where he worked as a desk officer for media law and policy. In 1993, he became Head of Office to Gerhard Schröder, Minister-President of Land Lower Saxony.

The following year, he was appointed Head of the Department for Policy Guidelines and Interministerial Coordination and Planning. Two years later, he became State Secretary and Head of the State Chancellery of Land Lower Saxony. In 1998, he was appointed State Secretary at the Federal Chancellery and Federal Government Commissioner for the Federal Intelligence Services. He also served as Head of the Federal Chancellery from 1999. Frank-Walter Steinmeier was appointed Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2005 and was also Deputy Chancellor from 2007. In 2009, he won a directly elected seat in a constituency in Land Brandenburg and became a Member of the German Bundestag. The parliamentary group of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the German Bundestag elected him as chairperson. Four years later, he became Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs for the second time, and served in this role until January 2017.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Ignatz Bubis Prize for Understanding, the Europe Prize for Political Culture, the Bosphorus Prize for European Understanding, the Willy Brandt Prize, the Tolerance Prize of the Evangelical Academy of Tutzing and the Ecumenical Prize of the Catholic Academy in Bavaria. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by Paderborn University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of Piraeus and Ural Federal University of Ekaterinburg. He is also an honorary citizen of the cities of Sibiu and Reims.

Mathias Cormann was born in the German-speaking part of Belgium and decided to migrate to Australia permanently, after first visiting Perth in 1994, attracted by the great lifestyle and opportunities on offer in Western Australia. He has been the Australian Minister for Finance since 18 September 2013, having represented the State of Western Australia in the Senate since June 2007. Since 20 September 2015, he has been the Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate. Appointed by the Australian Prime Minister and the German Chancellor, Mathias has served as the Co-Chair of the Australia Germany Advisory Group, along with Prof Dr Maria Böhmer, the Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Office on behalf of Germany.

The work of the Australia-Germany Advisory Group has led to a broader, deeper and stronger bilateral relationship between Australia and Germany. Significant achievements include the signing of a new more contemporary bilateral double taxation agreement, closer strategic relations through a biennial 2+2 dialogue between Defence and Foreign Ministers and the establishment of the Prime Minister’s Industry 4.0 Taskforce to enhance collaboration between Australian and German industry in advanced manufacturing. Holding a major Asia-Pacific Regional Conference for German, Australian and Asia-Pacific business and political leaders was also one of the outcomes of the Advisory Group work.

Before migrating to Perth, Mathias graduated in law at the Flemish university of Louvain (Leuven). Between 2003 and 2007 Mathias worked for major Western Australian health insurer HBF in a range of senior management roles, including as General Manager HealthGuard and as General Manager of HBF Health Insurance. In 2001, realising a childhood dream, Mathias obtained his Private Pilots Licence through the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia. Mathias is married to Hayley, a lawyer with the Perth office of Clayton Utz. They have two daughters, Isabelle and Charlotte.

Andrew was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of BHP effective from 10 May 2013. He joined in 2008 as Chief Executive Non‐Ferrous with responsibility for over half of BHP’s 100,000 strong workforce across four continents. His portfolio included Escondida in Chile, the world’s largest single source of copper.

He has over thirty years’ experience in oil and gas, petrochemicals and minerals and has held senior positions in BP and Rio Tinto. He has been a non‐executive Director of Centrica and has served on the Audit, Remuneration and Corporate & Social Responsibility committees. He has also chaired Demos, one of the UK’s most influential think‐tanks.

Andrew has a doctorate in Chemistry and a first‐class degree in Geology. In early 2014 he was announced as being on the Science Council’s list of top 100 UK practising scientists. On 1 May 2014 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London.

Julie Bishop is the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Australia’s Federal Coalition Government. She is also the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party and has served as the Member for Curtin in the House of Representatives since 1998.

Minister Bishop was sworn in as Australia’s first female Foreign Minister on 18 September 2013 following four years in the role of Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade.

As Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister Bishop has overseen the single largest expansion of Australia’s overseas diplomatic presence in 40 years, introduced the New Colombo Plan to support Australian undergraduate students to study and undertake internships in the Indo-Pacific region, and established the innovationXchange within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to develop bold and creative solutions to long standing development challenges.

She has strengthened Australia’s key strategic and economic relationships and enhanced Australia’s engagement with Pacific Island countries, including normalising relations with Fiji, leading international recovery and reconstruction efforts in Vanuatu and establishing a school of government in Papua New Guinea.

Minister Bishop promoted Australia’s interests at the United Nations Security Council, playing a lead role in the international response to the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine.

She previously served as a Cabinet Minister in the Howard Government as Minister for Education, Science and Training and as the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women’s Issues. Prior to this, Minister Bishop was Minister for Ageing.

Minister Bishop has also served on a number of parliamentary and policy committees including as Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties.

Before entering Parliament Minister Bishop was a commercial litigation lawyer at Perth firm Clayton Utz, becoming a partner in 1985, and managing partner in 1994.

Minister Bishop graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide in 1978 and attended Harvard Business School in Boston in 1996, completing the Advanced Management Program for Senior Managers.

Dr  Vivian  Balakrishnan studied  Medicine  at  the  National  University  of  Singapore (NUS) after being awarded the President’s Scholarship in 1980. He was elected President of the NUS Students’ Union from 1981 to 1983 and Chairman from 1984 to 1985.

After graduation, Dr Balakrishnan specialised in Ophthalmology. He was appointed Associate Professor of NUS and Deputy Director of Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) in 1997. In 1999,  he  became  Medical  Director  of  SNEC. He  was  appointed  Chief  Executive  Officer  of Singapore General Hospital in 2000.

Dr Balakrishnan has been a Member of Parliament since 2001.

Currently  the  Minister  for  Foreign  Affairs and the  Minister-in-charge  of  the  Smart  Nation initiative,  Dr  Balakrishnan  has  also previously  held  appointments  as  the Minister  for  the Environment and Water Resources, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Second  Minister  for  Trade  and  Industry,  Minister  responsible  for  Entrepreneurship,  Second Minister  for  Information,  Communications  and  the  Arts  and  Minister  of State  for  National Development.

Thomas Trikasih Lembong, also known as Tom, is the Chairman of Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board. He was the Indonesian Minister of Trade from August 2015 to July 2016.

Prior to his appointment in the cabinet, he had a long professional record. In 1994, Mr. Lembong started his career at Morgan Stanley and Company as a Sales and Trading Associate. He then worked at Equities Division of Morgan Stanley (Singapore), served as Senior Manager at Corporate Finance Department of Makindo and Investment Banker of Deutsche Securities Indonesia.

Between 2002 and 2005, Mr. Lembong served as Division Head and Senior Vice President at the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA). He is employed with Principia Management Group, and was a Managing Partner and CEO at Quvat Management, a private equity fund established in 2006.

Mr. Tom Lembong received a Bachelor’s degree (Bachelor of Arts) majoring in Architecture and Urban Design from Harvard University in Cambridge, USA in 1994. He also was elected as Young Global Leader (YGL) by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2008.

Professor Maria Böhmer has been Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office since December 2013.Her remit covers cultural relations and education policy, Germany’s United Nations and global policies, external economic policy and sustainable development issues. In terms of world regions, her work focuses on the countries of sub-Saharan Africa and the Sahel, Latin America and the Caribbean as well as South and South-East Asia.

Areas of special interest to the Minister of State include the promotion of vocational training as a means of fostering economic development within and outside Europe, the incorporation of the post-Millennium Development Goals into the post-2015Development Agenda, as well as strengthening and boosting humanitarian assistance.One key political focus is strengthening the role of women as part of Germany’s foreign policy.Since November 2014, Böhmer has been Co-Chairperson of the Australia-Germany Advisory Group, which has put forward and implemented proposals on intensifying relations.

Uwe Beckmeyer holds the office of Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and is the German Government’s Maritime Coordinator. Mr Beckmeyer, who was born in Bremerhaven, has been a Member of the German Bundestag since 2002. From 2004 to 2011 he was spokesman for transport policy; since 2011 he has been coordinator for maritime affairs in the SPD parliamentary group in the German Bundestag. From 1987 to 1999, Mr Beckmeyer was a Member of the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

Dr. Marí Bim Amude Alkatiri was born in Dili on 26 November 1949, where he was brought up and sent to school. In 1970, Alkatiri left for Angola to pursue university studies where he graduated as a surveyor at the Angolan School of Geography. At the completion of his studies, Alkatiri returned to then Portuguese Timor and started working as a land surveyor for the colonial government.

At the age of 20, way before the Carnation Revolution in Portugal that overthrew the Portuguese dictator Marcelo Caetano, Marí Alkatiri, along with three other colleagues, established the underground movement for the liberation of the then colonised East Timor. Alkatiri is one of the only two survivors from this small group. In the wake of the Carnation Revolution in 1974, this underground movement was turned into the Associação Social-Democrata Timorense (ASDT or the Timorese Social Democratic Association) established on 20 May 1974. On 11 September of the same year, ASDT was dissolved and succeeded by Frente Revolucionária do Timor-Leste Independente (FRETILIN – Revolutionary Front of Independent East Timor), in a bid to unite all Timorese around the cause of Timor-Leste’s independence, virtually initiating the Timorese National Unity.

Alkatiri became a senior member of the FRETILIN Central Committee overseeing the party’s international relations policy and one of the main brains of FRETILIN. Alkatiri was charged with the task of rallying support from the African countries for the Timorese rights to independence. On 11 August 1975, the Timorese Democratic Union (UDT) launched a coup against FRETILIN, in what was known as ‘anti-communist coup’ fomented by foreign intelligence service.

Consequently, Alkatiri took to the hills south of Dili along with the whole Central Committee of FRETILIN and retreated further south to the district of Aileu. It was here that the FRETILIN Central Committee established the FRETILIN military wing, the Forças Armadas de Libertção Nacional Timor-Leste (the National Liberation Armed Forces of Timor-Leste- FALINTIL), the force that put down the coup of UDT but also the armed forces leading the resistance against the Indonesian occupation.

With the Indonesian invasion imminent, on 28 November 1975, FRETILIN unilaterally declared the independence of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (RDTL). When the Government was sworn in the next day on 29 November, Marí Alkatiri was appointed the Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs. Only a few days after taking office, he was assigned to lead a delegation of some senior members of FRETILIN and members of the newly appointed government to seek international support for and recognition of the new Republic.

The Indonesian military invaded only a few days after Alkatiri and his delegation left Timor-Leste, which caused him only returning to Timor-Leste almost 25 years later. Unable to return to his homeland, Dr. Alkatiri established FRETILIN’s external headquarters in Mozambique and was a tireless campaigner for Timorese independence and continued to be the leading figure of FRETILIN internationally. Despite being a strong advocate for national unity, Alkatiri never left FRETILIN, which made him the only survivor from the core founder of FRETILIN to still remain with the party to date.

In 1998 when the umbrella resistance organisation, The National Council for Timorese Resistance (CNRT) was established, Alkatiri was appointed a member of CNRT’s National Political Commission where he led the drafting of CNRT’s Magna Carta or the peace plan. In the same year, he led the efforts to reorganise FRETILIN, which culminated in the holding of FRETILIN National Conference in Sydney Australia. The conference established the Presidential Council of FRETILIN to which Francisco Guterres Lu Olo was elected the Council’s Coordinator and Marí Alkatiri its first Deputy Coordinator.

In 1999, upon his return to Timor-Leste, Alkatiri was appointed by the President of CNRT to take charge of the negotiations over the Timor Sea affairs. He was the Chief Negotiator in the negotiations with Australia that lead to the achievement of the Timor Sea Treaty in 2002, which regulates the split of royalties from the resources in the Timor Sea – practically the treaty that brings to Timor-Leste billions of dollars to date, the important resources to finance the reconstruction, the State building and Nation building of Timor-Leste.

In July 2001, FRETILIN held its first Extraordinary Congress in Dili where Marí Alkatiri was elected as the party’s Secretary General with Lu Olo elected as President. The pair was then re-elected to the same position at the 2006 National Congress of FRETILIN. In 2011 and 2016, the pair again re-elected to the same top positions of FRETILIN respectively, but was now elected in direct internal party elections where every party members holding FRETILIN membership card cast their votes.

In 2001, Marí Alkatiri was appointed Chief Minister by the UN Transitional Authority in East Timor (UNTAET). After the restoration of RDTL on 20 May 2002, Alkatiri was appointed the first Prime Minister in the internationally recognised independent Timor-Leste. Amongst many of the bold policies his government put in place, Alkatiri led the creation of the Petroleum Fund, a Sovereign Wealth Fund that is intended to save wealth derived from the natural resources of Timor-Leste for the benefit of both the current and future generations of Timorese. Alkatiri was the leading figure in the alignment of Timor-Leste into the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI), who declared Timor-Leste to be the third country in the world to be EITI compliant and first in Asia in 2012.

In 2006, at the peak of the political military crisis Timor-Leste went through, he resigned from his position as the country’s Prime Minister in a bid to preserve the national unity of Timor-Leste.

In 2015, Alkatiri was nominated by the Government and appointed by President of Republic to be the President of the Special Autonomous Administrative Region of Oecusse and overseeing the implementation of the Special Zone for Social Market Economy (known by its Portuguese acronym ZEESM), an economic development policy Mari Alkatiri had authored.

Following FRETILIN’s victory at the Parliamentary elections of July 2017, and with the agreement of the coalition partners, Marí Bim Amude Alkatiri was nominated by the President of Republic and took office as Prime Minister of the VII Constitutional Government on 15 September 2017.

Hubert Lienhard has a doctorate in chemistry. He began his career in 1981 with Lurgi GmbH. Between 1989 and 2001 Dr. Lienhard held a range of management posts within the ABB Group, and in 2001 he transferred to Voith and became a member of its Group Management Board. From 2002 until 2008 Dr. Lienhard headed the Voith Hydro group division, and since 2008 he has been Chairman of the Group Management Board. Dr. Lienhard sits on the supervisory boards of the graphite and carbon specialist SGL Group, the Baden-Württemberg energy supplier EnBW, the precious metals and technology company Heraeus and the engineering conglomerate SMS Group.

He is a member of the Restricted Management Board of the VDMA, a member of the Board of Directors of the German Asia-Pacific Business Association (OAV), a member of the German-Indian Advisory Group and a member of the German-Chinese Dialogue Forum. On 3 February 2014 Lienhard also took over the chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA).

Several years as Parliamentary Group Chairman and Minister of Economics, Labour and Transport of the state of Lower Saxony. Until May 2011, Minister of Health of the Federal Republic of Germany. Former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, and Federal Chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). Currently, Member of the Managing Board, World Economic Forum.

Mark McGowan believes in the value of hard work and merit but very much supported by the values of equality, opportunity and compassion. He learned these values early, growing up in regional New South Wales, where his parents ran small businesses and educated their two sons at public schools. Mark studied arts and law at the University of Queensland and began his career in public service in the Royal Australian Navy, going on to serve as a Lieutenant at HMAS STIRLING. Mark is still a member of the Navy Reserves and was awarded the Governor General’s Commendation for Bravery for actions he took in 1995 rescuing an unconscious driver from a burning car. Mark and his wife Sarah and their three young children – Samuel, Alexander and Amelia – live in the Rockingham community. Mark also had an ambition to do what he could to make his local community, and Western Australia, a better place to live for all WA families. This led to his work in local and state government. Mark was the Deputy Mayor of Rockingham before winning the State seat of Rockingham in December 1996.

In the years since his election to the Western Australian Parliament, Mark has held many senior portfolios in both Government and Opposition. He was Parliamentary Secretary to former Premier Geoff Gallop and has served as a Minister in the portfolios of Education and Training, Environment, Racing and Gaming, Tourism and South West. As the Minister for Racing and Gaming, Mark drove the small bar reforms which have liberalised Perth’s entertainment scene. It could be argued that this policy – which many influential people opposed at the time – has done more to revitalise Perth than any building or monument. As Tourism Minister, Mark boosted WA’s tourism industry by negotiating to bring low-cost carrier Jetstar to Perth. As Education Minister, Mark got back to basics and brought in major curriculum changes including more exams, traditional marking and reports, and reintroduced the syllabus. In Opposition, Mark served as Manager of Opposition Business, as well as Shadow Minister for State Development; and Planning and Housing before being elected Leader on 23 January 2012. On 11 March 2017, Mark was elected the 30th Premier of Western Australia.

Until his recent retirement from politics, Andrew Robb was Australia’s Minister for Trade and Investment.

In this role, Mr Robb negotiated Free Trade Agreements with South Korea, Japan and China, as well as the 12 country Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Singapore. Additionally he conducted 85 investment round tables with 28 countries.

Mr Robb is currently a Board Member of the Kidman cattle enterprise, Chair of Asialink, Asialink Business and CNSDose, and strategic advisor to Beef Innovations Australia, as well as a range of national and international businesses.

Mr Robb’s agricultural experience began as an animal health officer, with major involvement in the successful brucellosis and TB evaluation program in Australia’s beef herd. Subsequently, as an agricultural economist, Mr Robb worked on public policy issues across a wide range of agricultural industries.

Mr Robb then was appointed the Executive Director (CEO) of the Cattle Council of Australia, before his appointment as Executive Director (CEO) of Australia’s peak farmer organisation, the National Farmers’ Federation.

Since that time, Mr Robb was General Secretary of the Liberal Party of Australia, including his role as campaign director of the 1996 federal election which brought former Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard, into government with the biggest Liberal Party win in history.

Shortly after the 1996 federal election, Mr Robb moved back into the private sector and for two years was a member of the investment team for the Gorgon Gas Project, a Board Member of Sinclair Knight Mertz – Australia’s largest consulting engineering company as well as CEO at Acxiom – an Australia-wide direct marketing technology company. Mr Robb also provided strategic advice to Australia’s 39 university Vice Chancellors.

Mr Robb stood for Parliament in 2004 and was elected to the Federal Seat of Goldstein until his move back into the private sector at the time of the recent 2016 election.
As a Member of Parliament, Mr Robb held positions as Chairman of the Government’s Workplace Relations Taskforce, Assistant Minister to the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and then Minister for Vocational and Further Education.

In Opposition, he held positions as Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Climate Change, Chairman of the Coalition Policy Development Committee and Shadow Minister for Finance, Deregulation and Debt Reduction.

Following the Coalition victory at the 2013 election, Mr Robb was appointed to the Cabinet as Minister for Trade and Investment.

In 2003, Mr Robb was awarded the office of the Order of Australia (AO) for his service to agriculture, politics and the community. As well, Mr Robb is the author of Black Dog Daze: Public Life, Private Demons (Melbourne University Publishing).

Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash is Minister for Employment, Minister for Women and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Public Service and has held these portfolios since September 2015. Senator Cash was previously the Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection and the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women from September 2013 to September 2015

In September 2010, Senator Cash was appointed to the dual roles of the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for the Status of Women.Senator Cash was Deputy Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate from September 2012 to September 2013.

Senator Cash has also been actively involved in several Senate committees including as the Deputy Chairman of the Joint Statutory: Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity.

Senator Cash is a Liberal Senator for Western Australia. She was first elected in 2007 and commenced her as a Senator on 1 July 2008.

Prior to entering Parliament, Senator Cash was a senior lawyer practicing in employee relations with Freehills in their Perth office.

Senator Cashholds an Honours Degree in Law from the University of London and a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) from Curtin University in Perth, graduating with a triple major in public relations, politics and journalism.

In addition, she holds a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Western Australia.Senator Cash is married to Richard Price, a barrister.She is the daughter of former Minister in the Western Australian Government and former President of the Legislative Council, the Hon George Cash AM.

Josh Frydenberg was elected to the Australian Parliament in 2010 as the Member for Kooyong. He is the seventh person since Federation to hold this seat.

In July 2016, he was appointed the Minister for the Environment and Energy, having previously served as Minister for Resources, Energy and Northern Australia, Assistant Treasurer and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister since the 2013 election.

As a primary school student Josh attended Bialik College in Hawthorn and then completed his secondary schooling at Mt Scopus College in Burwood. He currently lives with his family, in Hawthorn.

Josh has Law and Economics degrees both with Honours from Monash University and completed his articles of clerkship at Mallesons Stephen Jacques.

He went on to graduate with a Masters in International Relations from Oxford University, which he attended on a Commonwealth Scholarship and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Josh is also a former Senior Adviser to Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and Prime Minister John Howard and was a Director of Global Banking at Deutsche Bank AG.

Josh is a keen tennis player, having represented Australia at the World University Games in England in 1991 and the United States in 1993.

He currently sits on the Board of the Kids Tennis Foundation which provides coaching to disadvantaged kids.

Christopher Pyne was elected to the House of Representatives for the seat of Sturt in 1993. Christopher is the Minister for Defence Industry, and Leader of the House of Representatives.

In his time in Parliament he has been Shadow Minister for Education, Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives, Shadow Minister for Justice, Minister for Ageing, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Parliamentary Secretary for Family and Community Services. Christopher has also served as Minister for Education and Training and Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science.

In November 2001 at the age of 30, Minister Dutton was elected as the Federal Member for Dickson in Queensland.

In 2004, Minister Dutton became one of the youngest Ministers since Federation with his appointment as Minister for Workforce Participation, with responsibility for the Job Network, Disability Employment Services, Work for the Dole and transition to work opportunities for all unemployed Australians.

In January 2006, Minister Dutton was promoted to Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer. He worked closely with the then Treasurer, Peter Costello, in areas including Budget preparation, taxation, superannuation, prudential regulation, and competition and consumer policy.

Following the change of Government in November 2007, Minister Dutton was promoted to Shadow Cabinet as Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation. In September 2008, he was promoted to Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing.

Following the 2013 Federal Election, Minister Dutton was appointed Minister for Health and Minister for Sport and on 23 December 2014 he was appointed Minister for Immigration and Border Protection.

Prior to entering Parliament, Minister Dutton employed 40 staff in his small business following a successful career as a Queensland police officer, including in the Drug Squad, Sex Offenders Squad and the National Crime Authority.

Lucy Turnbull AO is an urbanist, businesswoman and philanthropist with a longstanding interest in cities, and technological and social innovation. She chaired the Committee for Sydney from 2012 to 2015.

In 2015 she was appointed Chief Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission, tasked by the NSW state government to assist in delivering strong and effective strategic planning for the whole of metropolitan Sydney.

She is Chairman of Prima BioMed Limited, an ASX- listed biomedical company undertaking clinical development for an immuno-therapeutic cancer treatment.

Ms Turnbull was the first female Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney from 2003-4 and in 2011 she became an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the community, local government and business.

In 2012 Ms Turnbull was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Business by the University of NSW, and was appointed Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Built Environment, University of NSW, in 2016.

Mr Jiang started his own business in 1997 and has developed Tianqi Lithium into a leading enterprise in the global lithium industry, by virtue of his steady and continuous efforts in the new energy sector. Listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, Tianqi Lithium is the largest supplier of core materials for new energy lithium battery in China and the largest producer of extracting lithium from ore. The development of the new energy brought unprecedented opportunities for the lithium industry. In the next few decades or even centuries, there will be optimistic and sustained development prospects in the lithium industry. Mr Jiang has unique insights on new energy and lithium industry and Sino-Australia economic and trade, and is pleased to share his practical experience and business wisdom.

Mr Tofail Ahmed, M.P. was born in Bhola, an island district situated at southern-western part of Bangladesh, on 22nd October, 1943.

He is a veteran Parliamentarian and was a contemporary of the first President of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was a central figure in Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War.

Mr Ahmed received a Bachelor Degree in science from the College of Barishal in 1962 and a Master’s Degree in Soil Science from the University of Dhaka in 1966.

Mr Ahmed served as the Minister for Commerce and Industries from 1996 to 1999. He was Minister for Industries from 1999-2001. He served as the Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry from 2009-2013, and then as the Minister for Housing & Public Works and Industries,from 2013 to 2014. He is currently serving as the Bangladesh Minister for Commerce, a role he has held since January 2014.

Mr Dato Erywan started Civil Service in 1989 as a Veterinary Chemist in the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources. In 1991, he assumed the duties of Head of Unit for the Miscellaneous Crop Unit. Later in 1994, he undertook duties on ASEAN Agriculture Matters and became the focal point for ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) Meetings.

He received his Combined Degree with Honours in Genetics and Biophysics from Leeds University, West Yorkshire in 1988 and MSc. in Genetics and Its Applications from University College Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom in 1991. In 2005, he was transferred to the Department of International Trade at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was involved in the Brunei-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (BJEPA) negotiations and lead negotiator for the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) until its completion in 2007.

On 17 January 2008, he was promoted to Deputy Permanent Secretary and within seven months of his promotion, he was then appointed as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam on 23 August 2008.

He was previously ASEAN SOM Leader of Brunei Darussalam and he was also a former member of Board Directors of Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) & Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for Brunei Darussalam in 2008 and Brunei Gas Carrier (BGC), Brunei Shell Tank (BST) & Brunei Shell Marketing (BSM) in 2010.

On 22 October 2015, by command of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Erywan was appointed as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam.

Dato Erywan is also currently appointed as Joint Deputy Chairman of the Brunei Strategy Council (BSC) with effect from November 2015 and Deputy Chairman of Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) in 2016. Amongst Dato Erywan’s honours and awards are as follows:

Elke Büdenbender was born in the Weidenau district of Siegen on 14 January 1962. She has been married to Frank-Walter Steinmeier since 1995. They have one daughter.

Elke Büdenbender attended intermediate secondary school in Siegen, after which she trained as an industrial clerk at a company of machine building industry in Siegen. She attended Siegerland College in Siegen in 1982 and then worked as a clerk at a logistics company.

In 1985, she began her degree in law at Justus Liebig University in Giessen, where she passed her first state law examination in 1991. From 1987, she worked as a student assistant and later as a research assistant to Professor Brun-Otto Bryde at the Chair of Public Law. She completed her practical legal training at Hanover Regional Court in 1994, when she passed her second state law examination. Thereafter Ms Büdenbender worked as a judge at Hanover Administrative Court. She has been a judge at Berlin Administrative Court since 2000. (She is currently on long-term leave.)

Penny is the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and a member of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security.

Penny was born in Malaysia and moved to Adelaide with her family as an eight year old where she now lives with her partner and their two daughters.

Before entering politics Penny worked for a union, as a ministerial adviser in the NSW Labor Government and as a lawyer.

Penny was elected to the Senate in 2001 and took her seat in 2002.

Dr. Anna Elisabeth Prinz is the German Ambassador to Australia. She took up her posting in Canberra in mid-2016, having previously served as the German Ambassador to Slovenia and Deputy Ambassador to Japan. Throughout the three decades of her diplomatic career Anna has held various postings in Europe, Asia and the Asia-Pacific region – including in Jakarta and Colombo.

Anna was awarded a doctorate in politics at Göttingen University in Germany in 1984 and she also holds a Master in Public Administration from the University of Harvard (Kennedy School, 1986). During her time at the German Foreign Office headquarters, Anna held various positions such as Deputy Head of the task force on EU enlargement, Media Commissioner and Ambassador for Science Policy. In her current function as German Ambassador to Australia, she places a strong focus on strengthening ties in the fields of innovation, Industry 4.0, start-ups and scientific cooperation.

Lynette Wood is Australia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, with non-resident accreditation to the Swiss Confederation (Switzerland) and the Principality of Liechtenstein (Liechtenstein). She is based at the Australian Embassy in Berlin.

Previously, she was the First Assistant Secretary, International Division at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet where she was responsible for providing advice to the Prime Minister on Australia’s foreign, trade and strategic policy.

Ms Wood joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1994. She has previously been posted to Germany (Bonn) and Canada (Ottawa), and has worked on Middle East, ASEAN, and Indonesia policy.

Prior to joining DFAT, Ms Wood lived and worked in Japan.

Dr Ulrich Sante joined the German Foreign Service in 1989.

Before his appointment as the German Ambassador to Singapore, Dr Sante was the Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to NATO in Brussels. He has served, among others, at the German Embassies in Madrid, Washington D.C., Vilnius, and Asuncion as well as the German EU Representation in Brussels. Dr Sante also previously headed the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO)’s Division of Common Security and Defence Policy. Dr Sante studied law at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg and Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn.

Dr Hans Carl von Werthern, German Ambassador to Japan since March 2014, was born in 1953. He is married with three daughters. He holds a diploma and PhD in Economics from Mainz University and an MA in International Relations from King’s College, London.

He entered the German Foreign Office in 1984 and has had postings to Hanoi (Vietnam, 1987-1990), Brussels (NATO, 1990-1992), Asunción (Paraguay, 1994-1997) and Beijing (China, 2007-2010). He was also seconded to the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy, Hamburg (1986-1987), to the Liberal Party Group in the German National Parliament as European Policy Adviser (2000-2002) and to the Royal College of Defence Studies, London (2003).

In the Foreign Office, he served as Deputy Head of the Training Division for Diplomats (1992-1994), as Deputy Director for Western Europe (1997-2000), as Head of Task Force ‘Germany in Japan 2005/2006’ (2004-2005), as East Asia Director (2005-2007), as Deputy Director General in charge of Personnel (2010-2011), and before coming to Japan, as Director General Central Services (2011-2014).

Dr. Martin Ney studied law at the universities of Würzburg and Geneva, as well as politics and economics at Oxford (1976-1983). He has a law degree from the University of Würzburg and an M.A. from Oxford University, where he was as a Rhodes scholar. From 1983 until 1986 he taught constitutional and public international law as a junior lecturer at Würzburg University, where he received his Doctorate in international law in 1985.

In 1986, he started his diplomatic career in the Legal Department of the German Foreign Office. He then headed the Cultural and Press Section of the Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, from 1988 – 1990. During the negotiations on the external aspects of German unification (the so-called ‘2+4-Negotiations’), he acted as legal advisor and chaired the legal committee in the final round. He then served as Executive Assistant to the State Secretary of the Foreign Office from 1991 till 1993. In 1993, he was posted to Washington DC as Counsellor for Politico-Military Affairs before moving on to Tokyo in 1997. After one year as the Embassy’s Deputy Head of the Economic Section, he became Head of its Political Department (1998-2001).

From 2001 till 2005, he was the European Correspondent of the Foreign Office, responsible for coordinating the German input into the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy. In 2005, he was appointed Ambassador and Senior Deputy High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, mainly in charge of political reforms. From June 2006 till July 2007, he was Commissioner for the United Nations, Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid of the German Foreign Office. From August 2007 till July 2010, he served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations in New York (Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary). In August 2010, he was appointed Deputy Director General, Legal Affairs, and in July 2012 The Legal Adviser of the German Foreign Office. Since July 2015, Dr. Ney has been the German Ambassador to India.

He is married to Dr. med. Gabriele Ney. They have two adult sons. Hobbies include tennis, sailing and playing chamber music – which has been particularly close to his heart ever since he served as co-principle flautist in the First German Airforce Band during his military service (1974-1976). When he served in Sarajevo he performed as a soloist with the Sarajevo Symphony Orchestra in the National Theatre. Several times, he played solo concerts in the Wiener Musikverein. Since 2005, he has performed repeatedly with the ‘Frankfurter Solisten’, the chamber ensemble of the Frankfurt Opera orchestra. Four of these concerts have been recorded on CD. In 2010, he played a concert as a soloist with the Nürnberger Philharmoniker in the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Since 1984, Dr. Ney has been a member of the Toenissteiner Kreis and, since 2001, a member of the Atlantik-Bruecke (after having been a ‘young leader’ of the Atlantik-Bruecke and of the American Council on Germany in 1991).

Stephan Auer studied Law and Politics at the University of Bonn completing his First Legal Examination in 1985. After military service and legal training at the Higher Regional Court in Cologne he joined the Federal Foreign Office in 1988. He served at German Embassies in London, Riyadh and Rome. At the Headquarters of the Federal Foreign Office, he had assignments in the Security Policy and Disarmament Departments, the European Policy Department and the Department for Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development where he served as Commissioner for Globalization, Energy and Climate Policy from 2010 to 2012. In 2013 he joined the European External Action Service of the EU in Brussels as Director for Human Rights, Global and Multilateral Issues. In September 2016 Mr. Auer took up his new post as German Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.

On 23 February 2016, Diane Jurgens was announced as the Chief Technology Officer for BHP Billiton, heading up a new global technology function. In this role, Jurgens is responsible for providing operational and information technology services to the company, as well as leading technology innovation across the organisation.

Diane joined BHP Billiton as Head of Business Information Systems in September 2015, leading the team responsible for all enterprise-wide Information Management services and systems and ensuring the successful implementation of the long term IT and technology strategy and roadmap.

Prior to joining BHP Billiton, Diane worked in the Automotive and Aerospace industries. Most recently, she served as Managing Director of the Shanghai OnStar Telematics Company, where she oversaw business operations, innovation and strategy for the leading telematics company in China. Concurrently she held the position of Deputy General Director of the Connected Consumer Experience, where she was responsible for the SAIC-GM connected vehicle business unit.

During her 17 years at General Motors, Diane held several roles, including Director of Global Product Development Information Systems & Services, CIO of the GM China Group, CIO of GM Asia Pacific and Vice President and CIO of GM International Operations. Prior to joining GM, she worked at The Boeing Company.

Diane has a strong technology background and rich international operations experience, including nearly ten years working and living in China. In her current role, Jurgens is based in Singapore.

Diane graduated with honours from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in electrical engineering. She earned a Master of Business Administration degree with a focus in international business from Seattle University. In September 2013, Diane received the Magnolia Award from the Shanghai Municipal Government for her contributions to the social and economic development of Shanghai.

Angus entered politics in 2013 when he was elected as the Liberal Federal Member for Hume in NSW. Building on his background in economics,Angus was appointed to parliamentary committees on employment, trade and investment and public accounts. He was also chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties. Angus was promoted to Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister with special responsibility for Cities and Digital Transformation in February 2016. He was reappointed to the front bench after the 2016 Federal election.

Angus’ portfolios stretch acrossthe whole of government to improve city liveability and tackle long standing issues of traffic congestion, housing affordability and the need to create jobs closer to where people live. He has a focus on regional cities and outer suburban cities.With a passion for cutting edge technology and the benefits for citizens of the digital age, Angus authored an essay The Promise of Digital Government, which was published by the Menzies Research Centre in 2016. Angus has a Bachelor of Economics (First Class Honours and University Medal) and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Sydney. David served as President of the Parliamentary Press Gallery from 2012 – 2016. He has also served as a Director of the National Press Club since 2005.

From 2004 to 2016 Werner Steinmüller was Head of Global Transaction Banking. In this role he was responsible for leading Deutsche Bank’s global efforts in Trade Finance, Cash Management, Institutional Cash and Securities Services and had additional co-responsibilities for the commercial banking business in Germany.

From 2003 to 2004 he was Chief Operating Officer for the Bank’s Global Transaction Banking, from 1998 to 2003 he was Head of Global Banking Division Europe, and from 1996 to 1998 he was Co-Head of Corporate Finance Germany.

Werner Steinmüller joined Deutsche Bank from Citibank in 1991 and was responsible for the origination of investment banking products and for the execution of ECM transactions. He served as Head of Corporate Relationship Management for Continental Europe and prior to this he was Co-head of the Investment Banking Division for Germany.

Werner Steinmüller is chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Postbank AG and was the Chair of BAFT’s Transaction Banking Global Leaders Group.

Werner Steinmüller studied at the University of Darmstadt and holds a master degree in mechanical engineering and business administration.

Justin Wood joined the World Economic Forum in Geneva in 2015 and is responsible for the Forum’s activities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Before joining the Forum, he worked for The Economist Group in South-east Asia for 14 years. For eight of those years Justin ran an economic advisory and research service covering the Asia region. His clients were governments and companies from around the world with deep interest in the region. His work focused on economic development, cross-border trade and investment, and business strategy. Before running the advisory business, he worked as a journalist, covering economics and business across Asia. In total, Justin has lived and worked in the Asia-Pacific region for a total of 24 years, including in Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea.

Justin is a graduate of the London School of Economics (1992) and has completed post-graduate studies in corporate finance at London Business School (2000). Justin is the author of several books, including The Economist’s Guide to Emerging Markets (non-fiction) and Once Upon a Timepiece (fiction), and is a frequent commentator on TV and in the press. He is married with three children.

David Singleton is the Chief Executive Officer of Austal, the world’s largest aluminium shipbuilder and Australia’s biggest defence exporter employing over 5000 people around the world. Prior to the appointment to Austal, David was the CEO of Poseidon Nickel and Clough Limited both based in Western Australia.

Prior to moving to Australia in 2003, David was the Group Head of Strategy, Mergers and Acquisitions for BAE Systems based in London. Mr Singleton spent three years as the CEO of Alenia Marconi Systems and was based in Rome. Mr Singleton has served as a member of the National Defence Industries Council in the UK, and as a Board member and VP of Defence for Intellect. He has held Directorships with Quickstep Holdings, which is a technology-based carbon fibre manufacturer to the Defence and Aerospace industry and also Austal, where he is now the CEO and MD. Mr Singleton has international business experience in senior executive roles in Europe, USA and Australia and has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College London.

Under Neumann’s leadership, the SLN has grown to 19 R&D centers located in 16 countries worldwide. The largest of those are in Brazil, China, India and the USA. As a member of SAP’s Senior Executive Team, Neumann has over two decades of experience in fast growth markets, with more than 15 years in India and China, where he was instrumental in SAP’s entry into China. Neumann was also heading the SAP Labs Brazil for a short time span. Neumann has led the Global SAP Labs Network since 2009. Prior to this, he was President of SAP Labs India and held in addition the responsibility as Senior Vice President, Software Development with engineering teams across the globe.

Mr. Neumann is recognised for his business achievements in Asia, evident through his many membership in high-level business circles and associations. He serves as a spokesperson in the Asia Pacific Association of German Industries (APA), a board member in the East Asian Association (OAV). He also participated in multiple high-ranking business delegations to Latin America, representing SAP in the delegation of Foreign Minister Steinmeier to Brazil, Argentina and Mexico in 2015 and 2016.

In 2014 Neumann was named ‚IT Thought Leader‘ in China for his achievements in the area of smart manufacturing. He has co-authored several books and articles on innovation and business practice in emerging markets.

Neumann holds a Diploma of the University of Applied Science in Ludwigshafen and a MBA degree from INSEAD, Fontainbleau and Singapore.

Dr Stephanie Fahey is the Chief Executive Officer of Austrade, the Australian Government agency responsible for promoting trade, investment and international education, and tourism policy, programs and research.

Stephanie has over 30 years’ experience both as an academic and executive working in Australia and overseas.

Previously she was EY’s lead partner for education in the Oceania region, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Global Engagement) at Monash University and Director of the University of Sydney’s Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific. Dr Fahey brings an international perspective to her work and a wealth of experience across business and academia.

Austrade’s first female chief executive, Dr Fahey has also served on the Australia China Business Council, the Australia China Council, the NSW International Education Advisory Board, the European Australian Business Council, the Board of Canberra Institute of Technology, the Foreign Affairs Council and the Australia Korean Foundation.

Stephanie holds a PhD from the Australian National University and BA (Hons) from the University of Sydney. She speaks Melanesian Pidgin. She was inducted as a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors in 2012.

Jennifer Westacott has been Chief Executive of the Business Council of Australia since 2011,bringing extensive policy experience in both the public and private sectors.

For over 20 years Jennifer occupied critical leadership positions in the New South Wales and Victorian governments. She was the Director of Housing and the Secretary of Education in Victoria, and most recently was the Director-General of the New South Wales Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources.

From 2005 to 2011 Jennifer was senior partner at KPMG, heading up the firm’s Sustainability, Climate Change and Water practice and its NSW State Government practice. Jennifer was also a board director for the firm. During her time at KPMG, Jennifer advised some of Australia’s major corporations on climate change and sustainability matters, and provided advice to governments around Australia on major reform priorities.

Jennifer facilitates the contribution of the Business Council of Australia’s CEO members across a policy agenda that includes economic policy and competitiveness; regulation; infrastructure and sustainable growth; labour market, skills and education; engagement with Indigenous Australians, global engagement; healthcare policy; and innovation.

Jennifer coordinated the development and release of the BCA’s landmark Action Plan for Enduring Prosperity in 2013,which is widely recognised as one of the most significant contributions to economic policy debate in Australia in recent years.

Jennifer has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of New South Wales,where she is an Adjunct Professor at the City Futures Research Centre. She was a Chevening Scholar at the London School of Economics.Jennifer is a National Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and since 2013 has been a Non-Executive Director of Wesfarmers Limited and Chair of the Mental Health Council of Australia.

Grant King was elected President of the Business Council of Australia in November 2016. He was a member of the Business Council Board from November 2011 until November 2015 and chaired the Business Council’s Infrastructure and Sustainable Growth Committee from 2010 to 2015.

Grant has extensive experience in the Australian energy industry. He was Managing Director of Origin Energy Limited from February 2000 until November 2016. He was formerly General Manager, AGL Gas Companies where he held a number of management positions over a 17 year period.

He is former Director of Envestra Limited and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association Limited (APPEA). He is former Chairman of Energy Supply Association of Australia (esaa), Oil Company of Australia and Contact Energy Limited.

He is a Fellow of Australian Institute of Company Directors. Since March 2017, Grant has been a Director of BHP.

Mr Lange has a very influential role as chair of the Committee on International Trade (INTA). Mr Lange has been influential within the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group in shaping policy on the inclusion of Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) provisions in TTIP and other EU FTAs. Mr Lange believes Human Rights clauses in trade agreements should be binding. He has released a paper in June 2017 calling for a reform of the TSD chapters in EU trade agreements and recommending the establishment of a sanctions-based mechanism in particular.

Reflecting his Lower Saxony constituency, Lange has an interest in the automotive industry. He is co-founder and co-chairman of the Forum for the Automobile and Society in Brussels and a member of the advisory board of the Auto Club Europa.

Ralf Kersting was born in Olsberg (North Rhine-Westphalia) on 16 December 1965. After attending grammar school in Meschede, Ralf Kersting began his training as an industrial clerk at the Hagen Batterie AG in Soest in 1986. Three years later, he began his studies of Communication Science with an emphasis on Marketing at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster.

Following his graduation, Mr. Kersting started his career at the Mercedes Benz AG in the sales department, where he worked for two years. In 1996, Mr. Kersting was appointed Authorized Representative and member of the Executive Board of the Olsberg GmbH, a 430-year old family-run company in the fields of metal processing and iron foundry. Four years later, he became Managing Partner of the Olsberg GmbH.

His honorary functions include, inter alia, a membership of the Executive Board of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) in Berlin since March 2013 and his presidency of the Chamber of Commerce in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) since November 2014. In addition, Mr. Kersting is a member of the ‘SME advisory committee’ of the Regional Government of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 2008, Mr Kersting is President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Arnsberg (NRW). Mr. Kersting is married and has three children.

Dr Jens Goennemann joined AMGC Ltd in 2016 where he brings extensive experience managing large manufacturing operations in Australia and Europe. In previous roles, he served as Managing Director of Airbus Group Australia Pacific and Airbus Helicopters. Before his seven-year appointment to Australia, Jens spent six years in Germany with the former European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), today known as Airbus Group. He was Head of the CEO’s office in Germany, and before that was in charge of Soldier and Parafoil Systems within the Defence Division. Previously, he spent two years in Athens, where he established and managed the Eurofighter Office of DaimlerChrysler Aerospace, one of the three founding partner companies of EADS. He began his career with Daimler-Benz AG in January 1996.

Dr Goennenmann has a PhD in Economics from the University of Hamburg and a Bachelor of Business from Hamburg School of Business Administration. He is a board member of the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce to foster the business relationships between both countries. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

As an avid skydiver, Jens enjoys jumping out of perfectly good aeroplanes which earned him multiple national skydiving titles in Germany and Australia as well as a world record. He is a triple Australian skydiving champion and was among 213 German skydivers who leapt into history 18,000ft above the Arizona desert to break a world record in October 2014.

Paul Kelly is Editor-at-Large on The Australian. He was previously Editor-in-Chief of the paper and he writes on Australian politics, public policy and international affairs. Paul has covered Australian governments from Gough Whitlam to Malcolm Turnbull. He is a regular television commentator on the Sky News program, Australian Agenda. He is the author of nine books including the End of Certainty on the politics and economics of the 1980s, Triumph and Demise on the Rudd-Gillard era and The March of Patriots, providing a re-interpretation of Paul Keating and John Howard in office. Paul holds a Doctor of Letters from Melbourne University and in 2010 he was a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at Melbourne University. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. Paul is a long-standing participant in the Australian-American Leadership Dialogue. He has been a Fellow at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Menzies Centre, King’s College London.

Peter has worked at senior levels in the Australian Public Service on defence and national security. Career highlights include being Deputy Secretary for Strategy in the Defence Department (2009-12); Chief of Staff to the Minister for Defence (1996-98) and Senior Adviser for Strategic Policy to the Prime Minister (2002-03).

Since May 2012 Peter has expanded ASPI’s role from its original high-quality research on defence to include research on cyber security; policing and international law enforcement, border security, national resilience and counter terrorism studies. Now with around 40 staff and close working relations with Government, Parliament and industry, ASPI is Australia’s leading think-tank on national security.

Peter’s research interests include Australian and regional defence policies, military operations, crisis management, government decision making and future defence capabilities.

Peter led the ‘External Expert Panel’ appointed by Government in early 2014 to advise Ministers and the Defence Department on the Defence White Paper, released in February 2016. Peter is a member of the Australia-Germany Advisory Group, appointed by the Prime Minister and German Chancellor in 2015 to develop closer bilateral relations. He is a member of the Advisory Group on Australia-Africa Relations advising the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Peter has previously held a number Senior Executive Service positions in Defence including First Assistant Secretary International Policy Division, First Assistant Secretary Coordination and Public Affairs and Secretary of the Defence Audit and Risk Committee.

Peter was Director of Programs at ASPI between late 2003 and January 2006 and has taught postgraduate studies on terrorism at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).

In the Defence Department, Peter has been the Deputy Director of the then titled Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation (2002) and head of the Strategic Policy Branch (1998–1999). In late 1999 Peter was co-director of the East Timor Policy Unit, responsible for developing Australia’s policy approaches to the international peacekeeping operation in East Timor. Following that, as an acting First Assistant Secretary, Peter was closely involved in developing the 2000 Defence White Paper.

Peter studied at the London Business School in 2000–2001 as a Sloan Fellow and was awarded a Masters of Science (Management) with Distinction. He has a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations from the Australian National University (1987) and a BA (Honours) in History from the University of Tasmania (1980–1984). He has been a Fulbright Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1985). Peter taught politics and international relations at the University of New South Wales/ADFA (1987–1990).
Peter was awarded the Public Service Medal in the Australia Day 2013 Honors list for outstanding public service through the development of Australia’s strategic and defence policy, particularly in the areas of Australian Defence Force operations in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. In February 2016 Peter was awarded the French decoration of Knight in the National Order of Legion d’Honneur.

Nick Greiner is a former Premier and Treasurer of New South Wales (1988-1992), a prominent company director with extensive linkages to Europe, and a regular contributor to public policy debate in Australia.

He is currently Chairman of QBE Asia Pacific as well as Deputy Chairman of CHAMP Private Equity and Accolade Wines. He is a Director of SGSP (Australia) Assets Pty Ltd.

He is also Chairman, Council of Advisors, Rothschild Australia Limited; Chairman of Advisory Board for Crosby Textor; and a Consultant to Transurban Limited. Mr Greiner is a Member of the Board of Governors of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA).

He is also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Andrew & Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law; the Advisory Board for the John Grill Centre for Project Leadership; and the Harvard Business School Asia-Pacific Advisory Board.

In the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 1994 he was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia for public sector reform and management and services to the community and in 2001 the Centenary Medal.

He holds an Honours Degree in Economics from Sydney University and a Master of Business Administration with High Distinction from Harvard Business School. He is a Life Fellow ofthe Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a Life Member of the South Sydney Rugby League Club.

In June 2017, he was elected as Federal President of the Liberal Party.

Elizabeth joined the AICD Board in March 2014 and was appointed Chairman in December 2015. Elizabeth is Chairman of Nestle Australia and the Bank of Melbourne. She is also Deputy Chairman of the Catholic Church’s Truth, Justice and Healing Council and a member of the ASIC Directors’ Advisory Panel and the Victoria Police Corporate Advisory Group.

In 2010 Elizabeth was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to public administration and to business, through leadership roles in government and private enterprise, as a mentor to women, and to the community through contributions to arts, charitable and educational bodies.

Previously Elizabeth worked in senior roles at the ANZ Banking Group, in local, State and Federal Government, and in BP Australia and BP International. She has held senior positions in the Victorian Government, including as Secretary (CEO) of the Department of Premier and Cabinet and Secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department. She was also CEO of the City of Melbourne.

Janine Perrett is a senior journalist and commentator who appears across the Australian media landscape from television and radio to newspapers and online.

She began her journalism career at The Australian newspaper in 1979 and during the 1980s worked in London and New York as a foreign correspondent for that paper.

During the 1990s she worked as a television reporter for the Nine Network on the Sunday and Business Sunday programs. She also founded The Small Business Show and was presenter of that program for its nine-year run.

Since leaving Nine, she has worked as a guest presenter on ABC radio and a columnist for News Ltd and the Sydney Morning Herald.

In 2007 she was awarded a Knight fellowship to Stanford University where she studied for a year.

Since 2010 she has been a presenter on Sky News TV and is host of The Perrett Report and The Friday Show an as well as a regular panellist on The Last Word and Paul Murray Live.

Brahma Chellaney is a geostrategist and author. He is presently a professor of strategic studies at the independent Center for Policy Research in New Delhi; a trustee of the National Book Trust; and an affiliate with the International Centre for the Study of Radicalization at King’s College London. He has served as a member of the Policy Advisory Group headed by the foreign minister of India.

As a specialist on international strategic issues, he held appointments at Harvard University, the Brookings Institution, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, and the Australian National University.

His scholarly essays have been published in numerous journals, including International Security, Orbis, Survival, Terrorism, Washington Quarterly, and Nature. He is the author of nine books, including an international bestseller, Asian Juggernaut: The Rise of China, India, and Japan (New York: Harper Paperbacks, 2010).

His latest books focus on the geopolitics of natural resources, especially water: the recently released Water, Peace, and War: Confronting the Global Water Crisis (Rowman & Littlefield); and Water: Asia’s New Battleground (Georgetown University Press), the winner of the 2012 Bernard Schwartz Award.

In addition to being a strategic thinker and author, he is a columnist and commentator, including for Project Syndicate. His opinion articles appear in the Nikkie Asian Review, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Le Monde, The Guardian, The Times of India, Mint, Japan Times, La Vanguardia, South China Morning Post, and other important newspapers. And he has often appeared on CNN and BBC, among others.

Senator Reynolds was elected to the Australian Senate in 2014 and is a passionate representative for her State of West Australia. She has over 20 years’ experience at the national political level working for Ministers, Members of Parliament and the Liberal Party of Australia. Senator Reynolds served for 29 years in the Australian Army as a Reserve Officer, serving in a wide range of part and full time appointments. She also has corporate experience.

Key career appointments include: Chief of Staff to the Minister for Justice and Customs, Project Director with Raytheon Australia, Deputy Federal Director of the Liberal Party of Australia, Commanding Officer of a Combat Service Support Battalion and Adjutant General of Army, the Chief of Army’s key governance advisor. Senator Reynolds was the first woman in the Australian Army Reserves to be promoted to the rank of Brigadier and was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross. She has completed a Master of Arts (Strategic Studies).

Senator Reynolds is a member of nine Parliamentary committees and is Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, the Senate Standing Committee on Environment and Communications, and the Defence Sub-Committee. She also chairs the Australia-Indonesia parliamentary friendship group and co-chairs the Defence Friendship Group. Senator Reynolds is pursuing new defence industry opportunities in WA, Innovation, gender equality and federation reform.

Professor Dr. Joachim Krause is director of the Institute for Security Policy at the University of Kiel (ISPK) and chairman of the Foundation “Wissenschaft und Demokratie”. He is editor in chief of the only German language journal for strategic studies – SIRIUS. He was professor for International Relations at the Christian-Albrechts-University at Kiel (Germany) from 2001 to 2016.

A political scientist from education, he started his career at the Research Institute for International and Strategic Studies of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Ebenhausen near Munich. He later became Deputy Director of the Research Institute of the German Society for Foreign Affairs (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik) in Bonn and in Berlin. He was a research fellow at the Institute for East-West Security Studies in New York in the 1980s and spent the Academic year 2002/2003 as Steven Muller Chair of German Studies at the Bologna Center of the Paul-H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University. He was member of the German delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in 1988 and 1989 and consultant to UNSCOM in 1991. He has written or edited more than 40 books and more than 200 articles in journals and scholarly books, among them Iran’s Nuclear Programme (2012), Afghanistan, Pakistan and Strategic Change (2014), and the Routledge Handbook of Naval Strategy (2016). In 2014, he published an article in International Affairs with the title ‘Assessing the Danger of War: Parallels and Differences between Europe in 1914 and East Asia in 2014’.

Rod has over 35 years’ experience in educational administration and has held a number of senior administrative positions within the Government and the private education sectors. His background covers both secondary and university education in Australia.

Rod has been involved in international education since 1987 and is recognised as one of the leaders in the successful establishment of the sector in Australia. He is one of the co-founders of Navitas and has been instrumental in the expansion and development of the Navitas model into the various markets in which it now operates. In April 2007, he received an honorary Doctor of Education from Edith Cowan University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of the international education sector both in Australia and overseas, and was the 2008 Australian Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

In 2010, Rod was recognised by his colleagues with an International Education Excellence Award from the International Education Association of Australia for his leadership in the field of international education.

Dr. May-Britt U. Stumbaum is Director of the NFG Research Group ‚Asian Perceptions of the EU‘ at the Free University of Berlin, and Team Leader of the EU’s Asia Pacific and Research Network (#APRAN) by Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Chatham House and Clingendael. #APRAN provides tailormade briefings by Asian experts for EU policy-makers.

She previously served as Executive Director of the China and Global Security Program at SIPRI, Fritz Thyssen Fellow at WCFIA Harvard, and in senior positions at the German Council on Foreign Relations and at Berlin Partner. Bridging policy and academia, Dr. Stumbaum worked at renowned think tanks in Europe, the United States and Asia (CHN, TWN, AUS, NZL), the EU Delegation to China, and at the German Ministry of Defense as a Reserve Officer in the political unit. She is Editor of the Blog  The SPEAR – Security and Politics in Europe-Asia Relations and Associate Editor of European Geostrategy Blog. She is the co-founder and former president of Women in International Security Deutschland (, served as the first female President of the Tönissteiner Kreis e.V. and is a full member at the CSCAP EU Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific.

Dr. Stumbaum graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science (MSc) and the Free University Berlin (PhD). She frequently comments in the media (CNN, Al-Jazeera, N24, and others) and testified before the U.S. Congress’ U.S.-China Economic and Security Committee on EU-China security in 2012.

Martin Herrenknecht (born in Lahr, Germany on June 24, 1942) is founder and Chairman of the Board of Management of Herrenknecht AG. After earning a Professional Engineer Degree, he took jobs in Switzerland, Canada and Germany, designing road machinery and managing work sites. In 1975, he founded an Engineering Service Company, and in 1977 the Herrenknecht Tunnelling Systems GmbH (transformed to AG in 1998). Martin Herrenknecht has received many honours, including an honorary doctorate (Dr.-Ing. E. h.) from the Carolo-Wilhelmina Technical University in Braunschweig (Brunswick), entry into the Handelsblatt Hall of Fame for German Entrepreneurship and the German Founders Award in 2013. In December 2015, he was presented with the Werner von Siemens Ring – one of the most prestigious technical engineering awards.

Jemma, as the Chair, provides the strategic external relations, risk management and leadership development for Power Ledger. Jemma has more than 15 years’ experience in finance and risk advisory having worked for 11 years in investment banking in London. Whilst there, she completed a Masters degree and two postgraduate diplomas from Cambridge University. Jemma is a research fellow at Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute, whose doctoral research into ‚Citizen Utilities‘ has produced unique insights into the challenges and opportunities for the deployment of roof-top solar PV and battery storage within multi-unit developments and the application of the blockchain. Jemma is experienced in the challenges of sustainable cities through her role as an independent Councillor of the City of Perth. She is also the Chair of Climate-KIC Australia, a founder of the Global Blockchain Business Council and a contributor to Forbes on blockchain disruption.

Helge Neumann is Executive Manager Business Development at WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH, the developing and operating company of the Science and Technology Park Berlin Adlershof. His responsibility includes:

  • attracting international companies and investors to Adlershof Providing customer services to incoming companies;
  • supporting Adlershof companies in entering international markets;
  • creating new business incubation formats for young sci-tech and start-up companies;
  • developing platforms for uprising new strategic and relevant projects for the Adlershof Science parks (e.g. analytics, advanced materials);

Minister Johannes Regenbrecht is the Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy in Beijing. Before being posted to Beijing, he was Germany’s Special Envoy for Ukraine, dealing with the Russia-Ukraine conflict and acting as Head of the ‘Ukraine Task Force’ of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. Earlier assignments included stints in Mexico, Minsk, Beirut, Pristina (United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo), Kiev and Seoul. Johannes Regenbrecht is married and has two children.

Dr. Peter Feldhaus took over as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Industrial Solutions business area on May 3, 2017. He is responsible for Strategy, Markets & Development, Communications, Business Development & Sales, and Technology, Innovation & Sustainability.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Peter Feldhaus was CEO of the Marine Systems business unit. He previously held the position as head of Corporate Strategy & Market Development at thyssenkrupp AG’s head office in Essen. Before joining thyssenkrupp, Dr. Peter Feldhaus spent more than 15 years with consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where he held various positions of responsibility culminating in his appointment as director. During this time he advised the thyssenkrupp Group on numerous projects.

Michael Gross is Managing Director and shareholder of the VC-Point GmbH and the Technologie- und InnovationsConsult GmbH, which belongs to the VC-Point Group.

After receiving his doctorate in economics from Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, Germany, Michael held middle-management position in large and medium-sized enterprises. From 1991 on, he worked on the establishment of the first EU-funded technology and start-up centre (BIC, Frankfurt (Oder), Germany), in the states of the former East Germany and on raising the first seed fund of the New Länder. From 1993 to 2010, he was in charge of establishing, raising and managing six venture capital funds in the fields of early stage and first expansion. During this time period, he therefore was responsible for venture-capital investments in more than 120 small and medium-sized businesses.

He has also served on the supervisory board of the Stemme AG and of a Berlin-based software enterprise. In addition to that, he worked as investors’ representative in several technology enterprises and has wide experience in management consultancy.

From 2003 to 2007, he served on the board of The German Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVK).

In 1999, Michael Gross was appointed honorary professor of the Technical University of Applied Sciences in Wildau, Germany. Furthermore, he is a founding member and chairman of the Venture iNNstitute (Institut für Venture Capital, Business Development and Innovation e.V.), which was founded in 2013.

Mr. Paul S D’Urso is a consultant neurosurgeon and the founder of Anatomics Pty. Ltd. Based in Melbourne Australia, Mr D’Urso’s unique experience in surgery, research, clinical teaching, commercialisation and medico-legal opinion has made him an internationally recognised neurosurgeon, scientist and innovator.

Mr. Paul S D’Urso is Australian born and educated. He graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School with honors in 1988. Mr. D’Urso completed neurosurgical training and invented the technology of BioModelling with groundbreaking PhD research. Mr. D’Urso went on to found Anatomics one of the worlds most innovative medical device companies that exports life changing prosthetics to over 40 countries.

Mr. D’Urso completed a fellowship at the Cambridge University Academic Neurosurgery unit and a clerkship at Harvard University. Mr. D’Urso has published and presented over 130 scientific papers and holds multiple international patents. He has won over 25 prestigious research awards and prizes.

Nev Power, Chief Executive Officer, Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (Fortescue) leads one of the world’s largest, lowest cost producers of iron ore, recognised for its unique culture, innovation and world class infrastructure and mining assets in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

Since his appointment in July 2011, Fortescue has more than quadrupled its production to over 170 million tonnes per annum and through an unwavering focus on productivity and efficiency has positioned itself as the lowest cost supplier of seaborne iron ore to China. In FY17, Fortescue generated revenue of approximately US$ 8.4 billion.

Nev leads Fortescue’s strong values based culture, its commitment to safety excellence, to improving diversity and to ensuring that the company’s success helps build strong and sustainable communities. Fortescue and its contractors employ 1,250 Aboriginal people, 15.8 per cent of the workforce and through its Billion Opportunities program has awarded close to A$2 billion in contracts to Aboriginal businesses.

Nev became a White Ribbon Ambassador in 2015 to influence, educate and show leadership on the issue of family and domestic violence in workplaces and the wider community and in 2016, he was named WA Business Leader of the Year.

Prior to joining Fortescue, Nev held Chief Executive positions at Thiess and the Smorgon Steel Group adding to his extensive background in the mining, steel and construction industries.

Nev also has a long history in agribusiness and aviation holding both fixed wing and helicopter commercial pilot licenses. He is a passionate advocate for the development of northern Australia and for its communities to reach their full potential.

Nev sits on the Fortescue Board as Managing Director; is a Fellow of both Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the International Advisory Board for Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat’sen University, China. He is an INSEAD graduate, and holds a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Business Administration.

Nev was raised on a grazing property in western Queensland and continues to run the family cattle business. He is married with three adult sons.

Dr Beatrice Gorawantschy holds a PhD in political science from the Saar University, Germany. She has been with the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation since 1992. After being posted to Ankara, Turkey (1993-94), she served as resident representative of KAS Manila, Philippines from 1995 to 1998 and thereafter as desk officer for South Asia, Southeast Asia, Turkey and Iran at KAS Headquarters in Germany from 1998 to 2002. From 2002 to 2005, she served as resident representative of the KAS Office in Bangkok, Thailand. This was followed by a four-year term as director of the Paris office where she was responsible for France, Italy, the Vatican and Spain. From 2009 to 2012 she was resident representative of KAS’s India office. From 2012 to 2015, she was Director of the Team Asia and the Pacific at Headquarters in Berlin, and from 2015 to 2017 she headed the Regional Programme Political Dialogue Asia and the Pacific, based in Singapore. In March 2017, the new Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific, based in Canberra, was established under her directorship.

Professor L. Gordon Flake is the founding CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre, a position he assumed in January of 2014.    Prior  to  moving  to  Australia,  he  spent  nearly  25  years  in Washington  D.C.  in  positions  including; Executive  Director  of  the  Maureen  and  Mike  Mansfield  Foundation,  Senior  Fellow  and  Associate  Director  of the Program on Conflict Resolution at The Atlantic Council of the United States and Director for Research and Academic Affairs at the Korea Economic Institute of America.

Jörg Migende studied Agricultural Science at the Technische Universtität München. He has been working for BayWa AG since 1998. From 1998 to 2014, he focused on agricultural machinery sales and services and held several management positions – in the last period as the deputy head of this business unit. In 2015, he was appointed to start with a new business unit, ‚Digital Farming‘ (Smart Farming and eBusiness). Since 2017, he has been responsible for ICT and Digitlisation for the whole company.

Kristina Sinemus was born on 16 September 1963 in Darmstadt and also lives in Darmstadt. She is married and has two children.

In 1998, she founded Genius Wissenschafts- und Kommunikations GmbH as the managing partner. In 2011, she was appointed professor at the Quadriga University of Applied Sciences Berlin. She worked and researched there in the Politics and Public Affairs Department on topics such as participation and risk communication. Since May 2014, the entrepreneur has been president of the Darmstadt CCI and so is the first woman to head a chamber of commerce and industry in Hesse. She previously served on the Darmstadt CCI’s Location Marketing Committee for many years as vice president.

Darmstadt Rhine Main Neckar CCI

Darmstadt Rhine Main Neckar CCI is the second largest CCI in Hesse with over 70,000 member companies. David has been Chairman and Managing Director of BASF Australia and New Zealand since July 2016.

Prior to BASF in 1999, David held a number of roles in a world-leading Australian subsidiary of a UK glass manufacturing business, including manufacturing management, strategy, business re-engineering, systems design and implementation.

David is a graduate of Monash University with bachelor degrees in Chemical Engineering and Science (Applied Mathematics). He holds a Master of Business Administration from Deakin University and is a graduate member of the Australia Institute of Company Directors.

David is a Board Member of Chemistry Australia, member of the Australian Industry Group and CEO Forum and Trustee of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia.

He is married and has three children.

Mat Regan has worked with CBH Group for 15 years, leading teams in the IT and Grain Quality areas, most recently in the role of Grain Quality Manager, where he led the implementation of Quality Optimisation and Supply Chain Optimisation.

Mat was appointed General Manager Corporate Services in May 2014 and is responsible for the Human Resources, Organisational Development and Shared Services portfolios.

He holds a Master of Information Business Management from the University of Western Australia, a Bachelor Science (Computer Science) from Edith Cowan University and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Currently based in Canberra, Sarah joined the EY family in the UK over ten years ago into our Government and Public Sector Transactions Advisory Services. Sarah has a strong focus on Human Services, and is passionate about maximising innovation inservice delivery to drive better outcomes for our clients, our communities and our citizens. She has been involved in a variety of large complex service and asset transactions for both private and public sector teams from planning through to execution.

Sarah is also the Oceania Innovation leader. She represents the region at the global level to design and implement innovation initiatives. These initiatives have included those externally supporting our clients navigate change, to internally to driving a culture of curiosity and enablement.

Richard is focused on strengthening dialogue across Australian society to improve the understanding of the critical role of innovation in meeting the sustainability, food supply and health challenges that we face in the future.

From a southern Victorian farming background, Richard obtained an Honours Degree in Forestry from Melbourne University and a Master’s Degree in Agriculture, focusing on satellite remote sensing, from the University of Sydney. After working in government extension and agricultural insurance, Richard held various management positions with Bayer in France, Singapore, Japan, China and Germany, accumulating experience in strategy, food production systems, marketing and distribution issues. Richard is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Richard is married with 4 children.

Dr  Peter  Mayfield,  Executive  Director:  Environment,  Energy  and  Resources, commenced  in  this position  in December  2016  and  is  responsible  for  delivery  of  the  science  that  underpins  the safe, balanced and sustainable utilisation and development of Australia’s water, ocean, minerals and energy  resources  and  systems.  A  key  part  of  this  is  to  understand  the  mechanisms  and impacts of climate  change  to  enable  mitigation  and  adaptation  strategies  to  be  developed  and  implemented.  Prior  to  December  2016,  Dr  Mayfield was  the  Business  Unit  Leader  for  CSIRO Energy, a position he held for the past two and half years.

Dr Mayfield has qualifications in Chemical Engineering, graduating from the University of Queensland.  He has worked in research and development in the energy and resources industry for over 20 years, holding a number of senior roles with BHP Billiton.  Dr Mayfield joined CSIRO in 2010 as Chief of the Energy  Technology  Division  and  has  been  working  for  the  past  six  years  to  ensure the necessary research and development is being undertaken to underpin the transition to an affordable, secure and lower emissions energy future.

Elizabeth Lewis-Gray is co-founder and Chairman of Gekko Systems, based in Ballarat, Victoria.  Gekko is a world leader in gold and silver processing technology, and energy (processing) efficient modular plants, designing, construction and operation. The company was established in 1996 and in addition to its head office in Ballarat, has offices in Perth, Vancouver, and Johannesburg.

Internationally, the company has specialised for over 20 years in the sale of capital equipment. Elizabeth lead the charge on strategic amalgamation and acquisition of large projects from a sales process, as well as target marketing and also a strong oversite of the major sales projects and key strategies, such as multi-tier selling and key account management. Through the business, she understood organised and directed many major selling projects in addition to having opened offices in Johannesburg, Vancouver, Santiago, Perth and Moscow, as well as establishing an agency and associates network.

Elizabeth is the founding Chair of the Federal Government’s Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) Growth Centre and has recently stepped down as Chair of Austmine, the peak industry body in Australia for the mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector, a $90 billion industry. Previously, she was a member of the Australian Federal Government’s National Precincts Board and the Innovation Australia Board.

Founder and now Patron of CEEC (Coalition for Eco-Efficient Comminution), Elizabeth was visionary in the formation of this not-for-profit organisation which aims to accelerate knowledge and change transfer in the field of eco-efficient comminution. CEEC has the capacity to have a meaningful global impact on energy consumption in mining and has recently been awarded the 2013 Mining Magazine Editor’s award. In August 2014, Elizabeth was named by the Canadian CIM Magazine as one of the top 12 influential people to know in the mining industry in relation to her work at CEEC.

Elizabeth was inducted into the Australian Businesswoman’s Hall of Fame in 2000, is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA), and has won several awards including the Warren Centre’s Innovation Heroes Award. In 2015, Elizabeth was nominated and listed in the Australian Financial Review’s “100 Women of Influence Award”.

As well as her involvement in the mining sector, Elizabeth is also Patron of the Biennale of Australian Art (BOAA). Before entering the mining industry Elizabeth worked in stockbroking and strategic planning. Her qualifications include a Bachelor Degree in Economics, and a Masters in Business Management.  In 2016, Federation University Australia honoured Elizabeth with a Doctor of the University Honoris Causa degree in recognition of service and contributions to the mining sector, mineral processing, business leadership, and environmental management.

Jeff Connolly is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Siemens group in the Australia Pacific region, the first Australian to hold this position since 1984. He reports directly to the Siemens AG Managing Board.

Jeff’s 30-year career at Siemens has given him direct involvement in all areas of the Siemens portfolio, as well as broad inter-cultural business experiences throughout Australia, Europe and Asia. Most significantly, he has lived and worked in China for a total of seven years. Between 2009 and 2012, he was CFO of Siemens North-East Asia, was based in Beijing and responsible for more than 80 manufacturing companies, which employed approximately 40,000 people and generated a turnover of approximately $9 billion.

Originally from Melbourne, Jeff is a graduate of Melbourne University, and has completed the general management program of Duke University USA. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, National Trustee of CEDA, founding member of the Australian Advanced Manufacturing Council, President of the AI Group Victoria, National Vice President (Victoria) to the Ai Group National Council, Director of the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, member of the Victorian Government Future Industries Ministerial Advisory Council, Director of the European Australian Business Council, member of the Business Council of Australia, member of the Prime Minister / Chancellor Australia-Germany Advisory Group, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Industry 4.0 Task Force, Director of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital PPP and Director of the New Bendigo Hospital PPP.

Siemens has been active in the Pacific region for over 140 years. The Siemens Group has interests in turnover in the region of approximately $2 billion and provides employment to 2200 people. Jeff lives on the Mornington Peninsula, is fluent in German, has four sons and his interests include golf, sailing and tennis.

Dirk Hoke is the CEO of Airbus Defence and Space and a member of the Airbus Executive Committee. His career spans 21 years and five continents (Germany, USA, Austria, Argentina, China, Morocco. Dirk Hoke became General Manager for the Transrapid Propulsion and Power Supply Subdivision from 2002 to 2005, before being appointed President of Siemens Transportation Systems China. In  2008, Dirk Hoke took the lead of Siemens’s Africa activities. He returned to Germany in 2011 to become the Division CEO of Industrial Solutions. He then became CEO of the Large Drives Business Unit in 2014 before joining Airbus beginning 2016.

Tom is responsible for Shell’s gas and power marketing and trading across Australia – comprising equity domestic gas and power purchases and sales on both the East and West coasts of Australia. He is also responsible for the management of supply and demand optimisation across the Shell Australia’s unique onshore natural gas to LNG gas chain in Queensland, and LNG/liquids off-take management on behalf of Shell’s QGC, North West Shelf, Gorgon and Prelude interests. The Shell Energy team is located in Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne.

Tom has over 15 years experience in the oil and gas industry, having joined BG Group in 2010 where he held a variety of roles within the BG LNG Trading team, most recently as Director of Global Supply & Commercial Operations. Tom studied at Bristol University in the UK, after which he joined Exxonmobil as a graduate and worked in a variety of positions over nine years.

As Head of Rheinmetall’s Vehicle Systems Division and CEO of RMMV and RLS, Ben is responsible for leading the tracked vehicle, tactical wheeled vehicle, logistic vehicle, turret, counter IED and airport equipment businesses of Rheinmetall Defence. With six production and engineering facilities in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands the portfolio of programs and products under Ben’s leadership include the Puma IFV, the Boxer 8×8, the Fuchs 6×6, Leopard 2 upgrade programs, Leopard 2 support vehicles, logistic vehicles, the Lance family of medium calibre turrets, ground penetrating radar, counter IED equipment, the PzH 2000 Artillery system chassis and aircraft Air Start Systems for civilian and military customers.

In addition to his European responsibilities, Ben is also responsible for Rheinmetall’s international hubs in Australia, the UK, the Netherlands and North Africa. Before joining Rheinmetall Ben held senior roles with General Dynamics and BAE Systems. At General Dynamics he was responsible for the European wheeled armoured vehicle portfolio and was responsible for the delivery of more than twenty 8×8, 6×6 and 4×4 military vehicle Programs to customers in Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Australia and North America. Prior to his time in the commercial sector, Ben served as an Officer in the Australian Army with a decade of experience in various roles including active service in East Timor and time with the Australian Defence procurement organisation.

Ben is a degree-qualified Mechanical Engineer and holds an MBA from the London Business School.

Originally from New Zealand and now an Australian resident living in Brisbane, Shane was Regional Sales Manager East Coast Australia for SSAB from 2005 until 2010, when he became the Australian Director of SSAB and Ruukki, and most recently held the position of General Sales Manager of SSAB and Ruukki Australia, NZ and APAC.

Keith McLean has a Ph.D. in industrial microbiology from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland where he developed expertise in oilfield microbiology, biofouling and bacterial
surface interactions. Following spells in industry and industrial post-doctoral fellowships in New Zealand and Australia he joined the surface chemistry group at CSIRO
Molecular Science in 1996 working on surface modification and characterisation for ophthalmic and other polymeric biomaterials applications. He was a team member (1996 ‐ 2008) and project leader (from 2003 to 2005) of the implantable contact lens project in the VisionCRC.

This team designed a polymer, surface and surgical methods for an implantable contact lens application which entered a phase 1 clinical trial. This team won the 2004 Royal Societies of Australia Eureka Award for Interdisciplinary Research and the 2009 CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement.

He was the Research Theme Leader for Biomedical Materials and Devices in CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering from 2006 to 2014 leading an 80 member team of polymer and surface chemists and biologists developing biomaterials for tissue engineering, stem cell propagation and implantable devices. He was Program Leader for Biomedical Polymers in the CRC for Polymers and Project Leader from 2008 ‐ 2012 of the Biomanufacturing Project the aim of which was to develop novel materials for stem cell proliferation.

He became Director of CSIRO Manufacturing in July 2014 where he leads 400 scientists and engineers developing solutions for high‐tech Australian manufacturing. In particular, CSIRO Manufacturing is directed to research in Biomedical Manufacturing; Chemical and Fibre Industries; Metals Manufacturing and Innovative Manufacturing. McLean’s research interests include surface modification and characterisation of polymers and their interactions with proteins, cells and tissues; development of low fouling surfaces and self-assembling materials.

He is a Past President of the Australasian Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Inc. and was a member of the Scientific Committee of the 7th World Biomaterials Congress. He was a delegate (2008‐2012) to the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering and is currently Secretary (2012‐20).

He has been a Keynote and Plenary Invited speaker at national and international conferences and reviews for several journals, Australian Research Council, National Health and Medical Research Council and NSERC (Canada). He is a Board Member of the CRC Polymers, Biomedical Research Victoria and was on the Governance Committee of the ARC Special Research Initiative Stem Cells Australia (2012‐16); the Advisory Boards of the Institute for Frontier Materials (Deakin Univ 2012‐2015) and the Melbourne
Neuroscience Institute.

He is a Council Member of the Australian Advanced Manufacturing Council (2015 ‐ present); Member of the Prime Minister’s Industry 4.0 Taskforce and the Advisory Council of Chemistry Australia.

McLean was admitted as Chartered Chemist of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 2006 and elected a Fellow, Biomaterials Science and Engineering in 2016.

Rebecca Knol is the Chief Executive Officer of the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy, the leading industry body representing the resources sector in South Australia.

SACOME members generate 34 per cent of South Australia’s exports, and $6.4 billion of its gross state product.

Rebecca brings significant national and international experience in the mining and oil & gas sectors to her role. In her first year at SACOME, Rebecca has contributed to significant change by introducing Australia’s first cross-sectoral electricity purchasing group, potentially saving the industry millions of dollars in energy costs.

Her previous roles include senior positions at Origin Energy in Australia and AngloGold Ashanti in Africa.

Today, Rebecca continues to refresh SACOME’s strategic focus and creation of member value through policy and advocacy leadership.

Kristian Wolf has been the Executive Director of the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce since 2011. He has been part of the German Chamber System (AHK) for 15 years and has a deep knowledge of the international trade and investment environment. Prior to his posting in Sydney, Kristian was the CEO & President of the German-American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta for seven years. There, he focused the Chamber’s activities on assisting German companies with direct investments into the Southern United States.

Kristian has led multiple initiatives to bring more innovation into bilateral chambers and overseen substantial growth at the organisations he has led.

Kristian is a frequent speaker and panellist on international trade and investment matters with a focus on the Australian economy, German industry, advanced manufacturing, the start-up ecosystem and infrastructure.

Kristian holds a Bachelor Degree (B.S.) in International Business from Juniata College and serves on a number of non-profit boards, as well as on the global advisory committee of the German Chamber Association.

Jane Halton is a member of the board of the ANZ, Clayton Utz, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the US Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. Her 33-year career within the Australian public service, included nearly 15 years as Secretary of the Deparments of Finance and Health (and Ageing). Previously she was Executive Co-ordinator (Deputy Secretary) of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. She has extensive experience in the delivery of the Australian Government budget and the management and performance of Australian Government agencies. She has also held a number of significant roles in Global Health Governance.

Charlie joined CSBP in 2006 as Commercial Manager – Fertilisers, before accepting the role of Chief Financial Officer in 2008. In 2009, Charlie was appointed General Manager Sodium Cyanide, and in 2012 took on the role of General Manager Ammonia / Ammonium Nitrate. Since 2013, Charlie has held the role of General Manager of CSBP Fertilisers. 

Previously, Charlie has worked in various corporate finance positions with Ernst & Young, Deloitte and Australian Railroad Group, a former entity of Wesfarmers.

Charlie is a Chartered Accountant, and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Western Australia and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investments.

Professor Brian P. Schmidt was appointed Vice-Chancellor and President of The Australian National University (ANU)in January 2016.

Professor Schmidt is the 12th Vice-Chancellor of The Australian National University (ANU). Winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor Schmidt was an astrophysicist at the ANU Mount Stromlo Observatory and Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics before becoming Vice-Chancellor.Professor Schmidt received undergraduate degrees in Astronomy and Physics from the University of Arizona in 1989, and completed his Astronomy Master’s degree (1992) and PhD (1993) from Harvard University. Under his leadership, in 1998, the High-Z Supernova Search team made the startling discovery that the expansion rate of the Universe is accelerating. Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, The United States Academy of Science, and the Royal Society, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2013.

Alexandra Voss is the Chief Representative of the Delegation of German Industry & Commerce and Managing Director of the German Chamber of Commerce in Beijing, as well as Chairwoman of the Board of the German Industry and Commerce Ltd. Taicang. Previously, she was the Chief Representative of the Delegation of German Industry & Commerce and Managing Director of the German Chamber of Commerce in Guangzhou. After graduation from the University of Cologne with a degree in East Asia Studies in 1999 she was head of the China desk at the Asia-Pacific Committee of German business (APA) and the Federation of German Industries (BDI) in Berlin. From 2001 to 2006, she held different positions at the Foundation for Economic Development and Vocational Training SEQUA, including project manager at the SEQUA headquarter in Bonn and coordinator and expert in a SME promotion project located in Wuhan and Beijing.

The daughter of Calabrian post-war migrants, Rita Saffioti was raised in the family orchard in Roleystone.

Rita’s professional background is in economics, having worked in Treasury in Canberra and then for the WA Government, before working directly for Premier’s Gallop and Carpenter in the previous State Government, ultimately as Chief of Staff.

Rita was elected to State Parliament in 2008, and joined Mark McGowan’s Shadow Cabinet team in 2013. Following the Labor election victory in March 2017, she was appointed the Minister for Transport; Planning; Lands, giving her the opportunity to deliver to a more integrated approach to transport and land use planning, and responsibility for delivering important commitments including the METRONET project and planning for the future Outer Harbour.Rita is married with three young children, a six year old and five year old twins. They keep her busy but also focused on making sure we continue to make Western Australia a better place to live.When not at Parliament or with her family, Rita can usually be found at the footy cheering on her team, the Fremantle Dockers.

Professor Peter Noonan is Professor of Tertiary Education Policy and a Professorial Fellow in Mitchell Institute at Victoria University. He is also an Honorary Fellow in the Graduate School of Education at The University of Melbourne.

Peter has played a major role in shaping policy in VET, Higher and Post Compulsory Education in Australia for over 25 years as a researcher, senior public servant, consultant, and adviser to national and state governments, companies and peak industry bodies. He has also worked extensively overseas.

Peter has also held senior management roles in the Victorian and Queensland VET systems and in the former Australian National Training Authority.

He was also a member of the 2008 Expert Panel for the Review of Australian Higher Education (Bradley Review) and the Expert Panel to provide advice on higher education reform to the Commonwealth Minister for Education and Training.

Peter was the recipient of a Fullbright Award to the United States in 1993 and is a former member of the Council of RMIT University and the Senate of the University of Western Australia.

Sue MacLeman has more than 25 years’ experience as a pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical technology executive with roles in corporate, medical, commercial and business development at Schering-Plough Corporation (now Merck), Amgen, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Mesoblast Ltd. Sue has also served as CEO and Board member of several ASX and NASDAQ listed companies in the sector and is currently a non-executive director at RHS Ltd., veski and Oventus Medical Ltd.

Professor Zlatko Skrbiš is Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Monash University. His portfolio responsibilities include overseeing Monash’s course and curriculum content, education policy, learning and teaching quality, and student academic experience. He is also responsible for the university’s digital strategy, the Professions of the Future framework, graduate research policy and administration, supervisor training, and the Monash Doctoral Program.

Professor Skrbiš holds undergraduate degrees in philosophy and sociology of culture from the University of Ljubljana and a PhD in sociology from Flinders University. His research spans the areas of migration studies, social theory and life-course studies. He is the author of numerous papers which have appeared in some of the key international journals. His books include Cosmopolitanism: Uses of the Idea (2013, with Woodward), The Sociology of Cosmopolitanism (2009, with Kendall and Woodward) and Constructing Singapore (2008, with Barr; Arabic translation in 2013). He is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland and Warwick University.

Prof Xinhua Wu is the founder Director of Monash Centre for Additive Manufacturing and Director for ARC ITRH for high value manufacturing. She is Fellow of Australia Technology, Science and Engineering and IoM3, UK. She is a world-leading expert in Ti alloys and in advanced powder processing, in particular 3D printing of metals. In 2014 her team 3D printed the world’s first full-size aeroengine.

Prof Wu has been actively involved in the research and design of alloys and manufacturing processes for aerospace and biomedical industries. Her research ranges from fundamental material sciences to their implementation in engineering components, from design to manufacturing, from laboratory demonstration to qualification and field testing. Some of her team’s products are now flying in aeroengines, aircrafts or implanted in human body.

Prof Wu was awarded in 2008 the Ti award by IoM3, UK, for her outstanding record of world-class research in titanium and its alloys. In 2014 she received the top Innovation Award and Jury committee award from global aerospace giant Safran. She and her industrial partners are also the recipient of Australia’s 2016 Best Research Translation Award B/HERT (Business/High Education Round Table) Award.

Kate was appointed Head of Defence and Industry Policy at the Australian Industry Group in August 2017. The Australian Industry Group Defence Council is the principal voice for Australian defence industry.

Kate joined the Department of Defence in 1997 as a graduate in contracting.

Kate has extensive experience with Defence capability development having worked as Director, Chief of Staff, and Assistant Secretary within Capability Development Group, Capability Investment and Resource Division. This experience has equipped Kate with the knowledge and skills to manage the development of major capital equipment acquisition submissions for theGovernment.

In June 2010 Kate commenced her first SES role as the Assistant Secretary Investment Analysis. As the Assistant Secretary Investment Analysis, Kate was responsible for overseeing and directing the activities of the Investment Analysis staff in the contestability function and preparation of Ministerial and Cabinet submissions for the acquisition of new major capital equipment.

In April 2014 Kate was appointed as Assistant Secretary White Paper Enterprise Management to develop industry related Defence policy including Shipbuilding and the Defence Industry Policy Statement.

Having acted in the position of First Assistant Secretary Defence Industry Policy Division from 19 November 2015 Kate was formally appointed to the position on 01 March 2016. Kate was responsible for the effective implementation of the Government’s approach to Defence Industry policy.

Kate has a Bachelor of Laws (1st Class Honours) and Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University.

In April 2017, Axel Limberg was appointed as the new Executive Director of the German Trade Office Taipei and delegate of the German economy for Taiwan.

Axel Limberg holds a degree in Public Administration and studied Law at the University of Hanover. In 1998, he passed the first second exam. From 1999 to 2017 he worked for the German energy utility company EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG and was responsible for investments in the renewable energy business in the Czech Republic from 2010 to 2016. He has 18 years of experience in energy business and also served as the President of the German-Czech Chamber of Industry and Commerce from 2015 to 2017.

FTSE Professor Peter Høj commenced as Vice Chancellor and President of The University of Queensland on 8 October 2012. Prior to this appointment he was Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of South Australia from June 2007. Before that, he was CEO of the Australian Research Council (2004-2007) and Managing Director of the Australian Wine Research Institute (1997-2004).

He was educated at the University of Copenhagen, majoring in biochemistry and chemistry, has a Master of Science degree in biochemistry and genetics, a PhD in photosynthesis, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Copenhagen and the University of South Australia.

Professor Høj is the chair of the Board of Group of Eight (Go8) Universities in 2017, a member of the Australian Medical Research Advisory Board (AMRAB) from 2016 and a member of the Queensland State Government’s International Education and Training Advisory Group (IETAG) from 2016. He is a senior consultant to Hanban in the Oceania Region.

He is a Fellow of ATSE and a Foreign Member of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. He has been a STEM Male Champion of Change since 2016.

Alastair is the Director Monash Innovation at Monash University. Following ten years as a research scientist in the UK he has been involved in commercialisation of technologies from Universities and Research Institutes around the world since 1999, including four years at Cambridge Enterprise at the University of Cambridge.

Since arriving in Australia in 2006, he has worked at Monash University where he has been responsible for commercialisation activities. He had considerable deal-making and negotiating experience, including over 100 licences and multiple spin-outs. He is the Chair of Knowledge Commercialisation Australasia, the peak body for Commercialisation Offices in Australasia and sits on the course review committee for the Association of Technology Transfer Professionals.

Alastair has a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry with Biochemistry, a PhD in Chemical Ecology, an MBA from the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He was a founding Director of the $30M Trans-Tasman Commercialisation Fund, and was a member of its investment committee for 5 years. He is currently a Director of the Monash spin out Amaero Engineering Pty Ltd.

Ed McBryde-Wilding leads the Digital Intelligence and Investigations Directorate for the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU). Debra Stirling is a company director and senior executive with more than 20 years’ national and international experience in mining, building and construction materials, manufacturing, agriculture, retailing and property development and management. At Newcrest, she was Executive General Manager, People & Communications,until the second half of 2014. Mark Woodland joined his mother in her new childcare business after he left the army in 2010, devising an idea for an app-based sign-in for children enrolled at childcare centres.

He developed Woodland Education’s three childcare centres to a $22 million business servicing 850 families. In January 2016, he sold Woodland Education to focus on Xplor.

Xplor is one of the first apps to integrate iBeacon technology, which allows parents to automatically sign their children in and out of a childcare centre through Bluetooth-enabled smart phones.

The business services around 200,000 users in the childcare space. Xplor has recently been implemented in some of Australia’s top private schools as part of a beta programme. Xplor has 300 schools waiting to use its software.

Nicholas started his career in the Australian Regular Army in 2004, graduating from the Royal Military College, Duntroon as a commissioned officer in the Royal Australian Corps of Transport. During his service, Nicholas deployed on multiple operations including East Timor, Kuwait, Afghanistan and the UAE.

In 2009, Nicholas separated from the Regular Army and established Press Logistics, a private logistics consulting firm serving on the Australian Defence Support Services Panel to support Defence capability acquisition and integration. This contract helped build DB Schenker’s sports and special events division globally in providing its services to numerous major events. Ron’s achievements granted him a position on the Board of Management for Schenker Australia in 1999.

In 2001, Ron was appointed as Managing Director of Schenker Australia and New Zealand.

During 2006, Schenker’s shareholder DB (Deutsche Bahn -General Railways) acquired the Global Logistics provider Bax Global. Ron was then appointed as CEO of the new joint company under the name of Schenker Australia Pty Ltd. The merger was successfully completed on 1 August 2007.

DB Schenker Australia won the International Logistics Services Contract in 2009for the LNG Gorgon Project, the largest project in Australia valued at AUD45 billion and DB Schenker’s largest project ever globally. Schenker moved 1.2 million tonnes with a turnover over of 1 billion euro. Today DB Schenker continues to handle numerous project activities.

From 1998 to 2004, Ron was a Board Member for the International Exhibition Logistics Associates (IELA) based in Switzerland. He was also a Board Member of the German International School in Sydney from 2000 to 2001. Although not on the Board, Ron is still energetically involved with both these organisations.

Schenker Australia is also a founding member of the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (since its foundation in January 1977) and is one of the Premium Partners of the Chamber – the most prestigious membership category.

In 2004, Ron became a member of the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce. His active involvement and commitment lead to his success in 2007 of being appointed as Chairman of the German-Australian Chamber and he holds this role to date.

Barbara Zollmann took up the post as President & CEO of the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KGCCI, AHK Korea) as well as KGCCI’s subsidiary KGCCI DEinternational Ltd. in January 2014.

From 2009 to 2013 Ms. Zollmann was Director – Coordination of German Bi-National Chambers Abroad (AHK) for North America, Latin America, and Western Europe – at the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) in Berlin. In 2013 she was dispatched to Korea where she assumed the position of Secretary General ad interim of the KGCCI between March and December 2013.

From 2001 to 2008, Ms Zollmann worked at the German-American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest (GACCoM, Chicago), as Director of the Consulting Department and as of 2006 as Vice President and Secretary of the Board of GACCoM.

From 1997 to 2001, Ms Zollmann was employed as Personal Aide to the Managing Director of the Koblenz Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Moreover, she took on the position of Managing Director of Junior Chamber Mittelrhein (WJM).

Ms Zollmann graduated in Economics (1996) and holds a Master degree in Business Consulting (2012) as a second degree. She pursued her studies in Germany and the USA. Following her studies in Economics she started a traineeship with the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHT), in Bonn, Dortmund, Brussels and Johannesburg, and has been continuing her career in the German Chamber Network since then.

As of February 2015, Simone Pohl assumed the role of the new GCC Executive Director and Delegate of the German Industry and Commerce in Shanghai. Prior to joining the AHK in Shanghai, Ms. Pohl served in various roles at the German-American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest in Chicago, including as the President & CEO from 2006 to 2015. Before moving to the U.S., she worked for eight years in the hospitality industry in Munich, Germany.

Chris Pogue is the Chief Information Security Officer, and head of the Cyber Threat Analysis Team at Nuix. He is also a member of the US Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force, The International Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators.

Chris is responsible for the company’s security services organisation: he oversees critical investigations and contracts, and key markets globally. His team focuses on incident response, breach preparedness, penetration testing, and malware reverse engineering.

Over his career, Chris has led multiple professional security services organisations and corporate security initiatives to investigate thousands of security breaches worldwide. His extensive experience is drawn from careers as a cybercrimes investigator, ethical hacker, military officer and law enforcement and military instructor.

In 2010, Chris was named a SANS Thought Leader.Chris served in the United States Army as a Signal Corps Warrant Officer and Field Artillery Sergeant. He distinguished himself as an Honour Graduate from a variety of Army Academies and Schools and received multiple awards and commendations for excellence.

Dr Natasha Ayers (nee Teakle) is an experienced researcher, trainer, strategic project manager and innovation specialist with expertise in Agriculture and Higher Education. She is currently Managing Director for AgriStartPty Ltd, a new company supporting commercialisation and innovation for the food industry, and Principal Consultant for UniBiz Connect. Tash is co-chair for the AgTech Network and judge for the WA Innovator of the Year Awards. Tash comes from a farming background and spent eight years as an agricultural scientist in Australia and overseas. Tash has spent the last 6 years working in research management at Edith Cowan University and founded iPREP WA (, a unique program that has connected over 100 PhD students from all five Perth universities to over 30 businesses. iPREP was recently awarded a national prize for Industry Engagement from the Australian Council of Graduate Schools. She has a PhD in Plant Biology and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (1st Class Hons) from The University of Western Australia, and has qualifications in university teaching, research commercialisation and leadership.

Carola von Schmettow (1964) studied Music and Mathematics in parallel, being awarded a Master of Music in 1989 and a Master of Mathematics in 1992.

Carola joined HSBC in 1992, working in various positions in Global Markets and Asset Management before becoming CEO of Asset Management Germany in 1999. In 2004 Carola was promoted to become a Managing Partner of HSBC Trinkaus & Burkhardt, two years later she was appointed a full Member of the Management Board with responsibility for HSBC Germany’s Global Markets and Asset Management businesses. Since June 2015 she has been CEO of HSBC Germany.

In addition to her role at HSBC Carola has a number of external mandates being Member of the Supervisory Board at ThyssenKrupp, Chairman of the Exchange Council Eurex Deutschland and Member of the Exchange Council Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Member of the Board of Directors at HSBC France, Member of the Supervisory Board at BVV Versorgungskasse des Bankgewerbes, Advisory Board Member of the L-Bank and Member of the Board of Trustees at ZEIT-Stiftung.

Pierre Jaffre was appointed as President of Airbus, Asia-Pacific in January 2014 and is based in Bangkok. In this role, Mr Jaffre has regional oversight of all of Airbus in the Asia-Pacific Region. Prior to his current appointment, Mr Jaffre held the positions of Managing Director, Malaysia and Vice President ASEAN within Airbus. Prior to joining Airbus, Mr Jaffre worked at Delegation Generale pour l’Armement (DGA). Mr Jaffre is also a Director of the Board of Airbus Group AP.

Melanie Brock is one of Japan’s most respected APAC specialists. She uniquely combines practical commercial business leadership and language skills to consistently deliver on business, regulatory and partnership outcomes for Japanese and foreign corporations both on global and domestic levels. Melanie has an excellent network in Japan’s corporate, political and government sectors – her network of senior Japanese politicians and executives is unique.

Melanie’s company represents leading Australian companies looking to gain access and invest in Japan. In recent times, Advisory has been engaged to support Japanese companies in Australia, and in Asia more broadly, as they expand their M&A presence. Melanie is Chair Emeritus of the Australian and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan having completed over six years as Chair. She is a member of the Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee (AJBCC). Other positions include five years on the Australia Japan Foundation. It is an exciting time in Japan for foreign companies in Japan – Japan is the fastest growing economy in the G7, has a booming tourism industry and will host sporting events in the next few years including the Rugby World Cup and the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Melanie remains passionate about assisting with reconstruction activities in areas of Japan affected by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. She was awarded an honorary ambassadorship in several towns in the Tohoku area for her work in Tohoku post 3.11. She is committed to ensuring more young people, Japanese and Australians, become more involved in the Australian Japan relationship.

Melanie was born in Albany, Western Australia, is a graduate of the University of Western Australia and has a Masters Degree from University of Queensland. Melanie is a mum and a grandmother and has lived and worked in Japan for 25 years.

Richard Hayes was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Gold Corporation on 1 July 2015. He had been Chief Financial Officer and Deputy CEO since joining the Corporation in March 2003. Richard was previously the Chief Operating Officer and an Executive Director of AGR Matthey from October 2002 to March 2003. Prior to that he was Director, Finance and Deputy Managing Director of AGR Joint Venture, from December 1998 to October 2002. Before that he was Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary of Golden West Refining Corporation Ltd, an ASX-listed company controlled by N M Rothschild & Sons Ltd. In December 1998 Golden West merged with Gold Corporation’s refining and jewellery manufacturing business to become the AGR Joint Venture. Richard emigrated to Australia from Zimbabwe in 1987 and held a number of management roles with Boral Ltd prior to joining Golden West.

Richard was appointed Chairman of the Gold Industry Group in 2015, a body established to give the gold industry a unified and stronger voice in promoting its significance to the Australian economy and community. He also actively contributes to the Western Australian community as a Director of disability service organisation Interchange Inc and is a member of the Board of Governors of Wesley College.

Stuart is an internationally respected information security expert who is responsible for the overall security and intelligence strategy and delivery at Nuix.

During his time at the company, Stuart has advised the United Nations’s peak cybersecurity body ITU and provided cybersecurity training for over 60 computer emergency response teams. He led the development of Nuix Investigation & Response, an innovative investigative tool used to delve into the causes and scope of data breaches. He also currently leads the development of Nuix Insight Analytics & Intelligence, a powerful security intelligence platform.

Prior to joining Nuix, Stuart used Nuix offerings extensively in breach response. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in Computer Forensics and is currently working toward a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He has developed and delivered training for a Master of Science program in Computer Security and Forensics, has recently contributed to a book covering evidence preservation as well as published several industry-recognised white papers.

Gary is the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director for SC8 Limited (pronounced ‘scate’) which leads the global development of actionable intelligence for the operational technologies environment, including infrastructure, plant, utilities and transport platforms.

Gary is also a board member for the Australian Cyber Security Research Institute (ACSRI), soon to be known as the Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre.

Before joining SC8, Gary was Cisco’s strategic cybersecurity advisor for the Asia-Pacific and Japan region where he was responsible for developing trusted relationships with government, industry, customers and research and education partners around cybersecurity initiatives and thought leadership. Gary also spent twenty years with the Royal Australian Air Force where he worked on Space and C4I capability development programs.

Gary has a Bachelor of Engineering from Curtin University and a Master’s of Science specialising in Operations Research and Space Operations at the US Air Force Institute of Technology.


Fiona has strong commercial experience gained in strategy, M&A and operational roles across the energy sector spanning the value chain from utility retailer to infrastructure asset management in Australia and Asia, including 4 years at Origin Energy and 12 years at Deutsche Bank. Her work has covered two decades spanning coal, gas and solar, bringing with it a passion for the disruption underway in the industry.

  • Contributed to PwC’s Infrastructure Lead Advisory (ILA) proposal bid to develop a solar energy park in North Queensland which included the support of institutional debt and equity investors, large industrial corporates for off-take, the traditional owners of the Port Curtis Coal Coast region for local jobs and Central Queensland University to facilitate academic research, education and training.
  • Led the energy scoping study work being completed by PwC for the Large Format Retail Association to consider and explore the opportunity of a collective energy buying group for their members.
  • Led Origin’s successful cross divisional bid to be selected as Sekisui House’s Energy Partner for a commercial and residential property development in South-East Queensland.
  • Developed and executed the large-scale corporate solar strategy across the Origin’s corporate, REIT and property developer customers and clients.

  • Completed the sale of the investment in Yallourn Energy to China Light & Power utilising option pricing to accommodate uncertain forecasts around the price of electricity, which resulted in approval to sell.

Jenna Qian is CEO of Destination Marketing for Ctrip Group, helping travel destinations around the globe to optimise their marketing solutions and product offerings, and as a result, to increase their awareness and number of visitors. Before her current role, she was CEO of Qunar’s Travel Guides Business, and Head of Communications and Investor Relations for Qunar from 2011 to 2015.

Prior to joining Qunar, Jenna had worked for a number of leading global communications consultancies such as Hill & Knowlton, Fleishman Hillard in both New York and Beijing. Earlier in her career, Jenna worked as an investment banking analyst in JP Morgan and management consultant in Booz Allen Hamilton in New York.

Jenna holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Rutgers University and a Certificate in Public Relations from New York University.
